COMPUTER ANIMATED FILMS thread | SOUL (Jan 12), TURNING RED (Feb 09), and LUCA (Mar 22) return to theaters in 2024

Recommended Posts

Computer animated films are very cliched, convencional, predicable and mediocre nowadays.

We had a mediocre year in 2011, but there were a few gems. Arthurt Christmas, Rio and Rango--and some really great projects are indevelopment out there. Pixar's Mind Movie and Dinosaur Movie have enormous potential.

Arthur Christmas was great fun. Rio was such a visually beautiful film and even more fun than Arthur. Great animation IMO. But yes, I agree with Mayhem, a down year for animation nonetheless.

To be fair, 2010 had the strongest animation line-up in years. What goes up must come down.

Oh, please, Rio? What a poor plot without any sustance, but full of bad jokes that obviously kids and someone else could like. All for the best economic profit. I see Rango as a missed oportunity to make a more interesting story, but at least had better characters.

Were you fired from one of these types of studios? Rio and Rango were fantastic.

Have to completely disagree. Rio, I thought was beautifull animated, which right from the start makes it better than many animated films, But I thought they made it a very fun and entertaining film that didn't take itself seriously, but just enough that you connected with the film. I though the dance sequences and jokes were flat out funny. Maybe I'm just a dumbed down movie goer, but Rio was a nice surprise in the animation world of 2011 for me.

It seems that most animated films gross over 100 million dollars consistently. My question is, what caused it? Is it just an increase in animated films? It's not as if there are more children than 20 years ago. Are more adults going to see kid's films? Although I don't know why that would be. I saw Ice Age 4 today and thought it was a lazy piece of garbage.

Second tier studios have gotten better and better at picking/writing their stories (plus there are more of them than ever), and they've also also found better ways to make animation for cheaper. Bigger studios have also grown to the point of making more features. Probably more families seeing more movies every year.

Price.Price is much higher than years before.

I don't care for adjusted numbers myself -- you assume that a said movie would sell the same amount of tickets at a higher price. You also ignore changing market-forces that limit total and repeat customers (shorter theatrical releases, home video, DVD, digital streaming, Demand, rental, etc) -- all of which impact attendance as well.Pieman, check out this link and watch the topic vid. It's one of the top guys on the exec side of animated films today talking about the changing market.http://forums.boxoffice.com/index.php?/topic/4016-the-illumination-entertainment-club/And I think it's 2014, but there's one year coming up with something like 14 planned wide-release animated features. Too much! Though I'm betting a good handful of them will not hit 100M ^_^
