peludo
^For sure. BOM has not complete data about Jaws but OW was 7 million, it dropped a 3.6% in 2nd, a 5.4% in 3rd and a 7.6% in 4th weekend. Later, 6th weekend was bigger than 4th. Other times... http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=weekend&id=jaws.htm

tufftuff
http://boxofficemojo.com/alltime/weekends/moreweekends.htm?page=12&p=.htm You can calculate from here. One of the best of the modern era is Silver Linings Playbook. x298 from limited opening and about x30 from wide release
Incarnadine
Mojo's your friend. But off the top of my head, in the modern era ('90s onwards): Sixth Sense, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Titanic... I was thinking of those too, as well as Avatar, obviously. Also, going from memory when I compared their runs, Bridesmaids and The Help were both over 6x their opening weekends. lilmac
What about those IMAX nature movies?
Incarnadine
Films that opened small but got an Oscar boost usually have impressive legs. Shakespeare In Love is a good example, it opened wide (after opening limited on 8 screens and made a bit more than 10 mil before opening wide) to $4,224,426, it ended 33 weeks later at $100,317,794 about $90 million, or a bit more than 21x from it's wide opening. It's biggest weekend came after it won best picture, about 10 weeks after it first opened limited.
tufftuff
Also movies with high multipliers that aren't sequels make the theaters the most money. The theater gets a higher percentage the longer it plays
GiantCALBears
It started limited so it isn't really a fair comparison. How that PoS made so much dollar I have no idea. But it only had a true wide release half way in for a few weeks so hard to categorize it
