My guess would be that there's really no need to start marketing Cars 3 this far in advance, the fact that toy cars from Cars are a go-to gift for boys nowadays does enough to keep this franchise in mind. Disney rushed to say they were fake when all the lame Rapunzel complaints started coming in, and they were all over merchandise just a few months later.
