Characters are given traits (or names) for any number of silly reasons -- the ST guys are just being transparent about this one. I think it's a nice little touch, and it certainly fits Trek's history of being progressive.

Watch some old Trek, Naked Time. Sulu was pretty gay in the sixties.

LGBT,women, minorities, hell even white men I don't care if a movie, tv show, novel or comic has all of, one of or none of these groups.  I just want to have those involved tell its audience a great story.  That's most important

I completely agree.  I'm not waiting until September to watch it because of a last minute scheduling decision.

To be fair I think they expected it to flop here anyway as Trek was never major here, but still...

Exactly, ST2 was released wide here one month later and did only $5.2M. They should have learned. ST3 was likely to be much higher.
