Community Manager Water Bottle Posted December 23, 2014 Community Manager Share Posted December 23, 2014 ST4 was a movie that was not exactly embraced by ST fans when it came out, but as the years passed, people looked back on it more and more fondly. The highest grossing Star Trek film before the 2009 version and the second highest RT score is ST4-at least for the original cast. ST4 helped pave the way for the misfire (and lighthearted/comedic) ST5 which almost killed the franchise. ST4 was actually embraced by ST fans when it first came out-very much so. It was considered a strong finish to the trilogy that began with the second movie. Maybe the hardcore fans had trouble embracing it but whatever. Hardcore fans are very fickle.
The47th
I like Justin Lin, but I'm afraid this means we're not going to get "real" Star Trek, we're going to get modern nuTrek trying to be even funnier like GOTG. Still, "real" Trek comes from the script, not necessarily from the director. If you don't have a coherent script with good ideas and meaningful stories...you get ST09 in the best case. Elessar
Apparently Better Luck Tomorrow was not bad, which he directed and co-wrote. Maybe he has more in him than brainless action. I can only hope... Edited December 23, 2014 by Elessar
The Stingray
Utterly terrible choice of director. Lin has no feel for tone or pacing, and can't build dramatic tension.

darkelf
Well, Lin does have some great episodes of Community under his belt.

The Futurist
Wait, I thought Lin was doing Bourne 5 for summer 2016 ? Greengrass returned finally ? This Star Trek aims which summer, 2017 ?
The47th
Do you put STID over ST09? Absolutely. STID's story has actual concepts and ideas. It makes you think about the lines you are willing to cross when it comes to defend your people. Which is actually one of the main themes of the later seasons of Deep Space Nine. ST09 is great when it comes to introduce the characters, but when they are done with that you are left with a story about Romulans filled with plotholes and ultimately empty of any substance. Avatree
I watched Star Trek 2009 a few days ago, really don't see what everyone thought is so great about it. I just thought it was okay, not many issues with it but also not much to like.

Agreed on all counts. STID gets a lot criticism and I just don t get it, probably the Khan thing which I don t mind at all. He s still a better villain than Hulk/ banner. Jay Beezy
Cry me a river of magic blood darling. Not the only issue. How about Spock calling up Spock Prime to ask about Khan? He might as well had just popped in the Wrath of Khan DVD.
