The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Record opening in Philippines and India, stabilizing elsewhere

Recommended Posts

Closing abroad with Godzilla and the upcoming Xmen DOFP and Maleficient.  I don't see it reaching $700M.

It has maybe $20 M left at best on the foreign front and needs around another $50M at home to reach it.

It made 30M+ OS this weekend, won't miss 500M OS.

How to add $40 M ?

It's closing in a lot of countries where it opened 5 weeks ago as DOFP is opening on wednesday already with Godzilla taking its full gear and Maleficent is right at the corner, within 10 days.

It did only 57m last week, down 55% from the week before. Needs another 40m for 500m. The chance is basically dead. Mutants full power this week globally.

So WW finish under 720M WW... YES! That's what I wanted!

Or the mutants could easily disappoint. Prove once again that X-Men is not big with foreign audiences, just like Star Trek last year.

How ?

Its theater counts in a lot of countries is reduced (like one per day in two theaters in my city).

That movie has been out since April the 16th in a majority of countries.  CAP2 stayed in my cinema three whole weeks.  Spidey has had one session per day for the past week  and is closing on tuesday nigh after 5 weeks as DOFP will be released on wednesday then Maleficent on the next one.

Quite frankly, it will need for it to stay three extra week with no new releases to add those extra $40M.

Only China may add a little more money but anywhere, i don't see it.

movie year OS-China

SM1 2002    414

SM2 2004    404

SM3 2007    535

TASM 2012  442

TSM2 2014  <400

With the exception of Spider-Man 3 the BO of all Spideys has remained about the same in the World without China and Northamerica. It grew in China and it shrunk in NA.

is at 461m. needs 39m more. had a 31.5m weekend. even with dofp releasing, 500m is a lock.

EDIT:

last week - 57.5m. next 4 weeks:

23 (-60%) [mon-thu no dofp..so drop due to dofp will be divided over next weekend, and weekdays after that]

9.2 (-60%) [first weekdays of dofp]

4.6 (-50%)

2.3 (-50%)

39.1 => 500.1

that's just 4 weeks. will play out some more.

it will also stabilize(<50%) drop at some point on the lower side. will go north of 505m at least.

if you break up china and rest of the world, it will probably drop 70% in china and 50% ROW. So next week will give us the big picture. Problem for TASM2 now is China is the biggest driver.

But 500M should happen for sure. But definitely not 750M WW.

yeah. looks like it will max out at 510m. dom 205-210m. ww 715-720m. below ca2. that's something.

based on last screen appearances Spider-Man, Superman,Thor and Captain America are now second rated SuperHeroes with WW BO of $650m to $750m

All 4 behind the top 2 Iron Man and Batman, who command over $1b

You of all people should know most of this came from China, where it will die when DOFP releases next week.

Exactly.

It did $31M this week, $22M of which is China.  So, it did $9M elsewhere.

Where are those extra $40M to be found with Godzilla fully out a few days ago and Dofp released in two days in a lot of european countries, then in three days in the rest of them and in latine america, then on friday in China and Asia ?

TASM2 has basicly 48 hours before it is removed in a majority of theaters where it has been running since April the 16th and then for the residual left has to compete with direct competitor DOFP, Godzilla and a bunch of newcommer in the form of local releases.

In my opinion, $40m is dead in the water.  It had a chance if it had hit $475M+ this weekend like i said last week. It may even struggle to hit TASM's $490m if it completely falls in China when opposed to DOFP this  coming weekend.

It grossed about 57M for the whole week Ent, 31M is weekend only.

Removing China from the equation, the past few weekends have been:

May 2-4: 107.6M

May 9-11: 44.8M (-58.4%) (Full week 79.9M)

May 16-18:18.0M (-59.8%) (Full week 34.2M)

Next weekend should also drop around 60% thanks to X-Men opening. So there seems to be another $25m possible from here on.

China looks to have around another $15m potential. So TASM2 will just scrape by 500M. Worldwide, it may very well lose to Cap2.
