tawasal
What would you recommend? I have seen some old movies, but not much and I wanna see the best. So instead of just watching all old movies, I want to know which ones I should give my time and which ones not to. So far I have watched. [*]The Good The Bad & The Ugly [*]12 angry men [*]it's a wonderful life [*]once upon a time in the west [*]psycho [*]apocalypse now [*]all charlie chaplin movies [*]Dr. Strangelove [*]Paths of Glory [*]To Kill a Mockingbird [*]Citizen Kane [*]2001: A Space Odyssey [*]The Great Escape [*]Lawrence of Arabia I have watched all this long time ago. rukaio101
If you enjoyed The Good The Bad and The Ugly, check out the first two films in The Man With No Name Trilogy, A Fistful of Dollars and A Few Dollars More. In my opinion, A Few Dollars More pretty much rivals TGTBATU and A Fistful of Dollars is worth a watch as well. You could also check out the other pre-1970 western the director (Sergio Leone) did without Clint Eastwood, Once Upon a time in the West
Jake Gittes
Check out some classic noir films - The Maltese Falcon, Double Indemnity, The Third Man, The Big Sleep, just off the top of my head. Lawrence of Arabia, 2001, Rosemary's Baby, Vertigo, The Apartment, The Killing, Paths of Glory, Rear Window, A Streetcar Named Desire, All About Eve, Sunset Blvd., Casablanca, Citizen Kane are all must-sees when it comes to English-language films made before 1970.

luna
okay, it seems as if we need some foreign representation. the most famous film from the most famous foreign directors: breathless (jean-luc godard) the 400 blows (francois truffaut) the rules of the game (jean renoir) M (fritz lang) the passion of joan of arc (carl theodor dreyer) aguirre, the wrath of god (werner herzog) seven samurai (akira kurosawa) bicycle thieves (vittorio de sica) persona (ingmar bergman) tokyo story (yasujiro ozu) 8 1/2 (federico fellini) solaris (andrei tarkovsky) sunrise (f. w. murnau) battleship potemkin (sergei eisenstein) start with those and you're well on your way.
The Toymaker
Rope and Rear Window. By far the best Hitchcock films and they are both pre-1970 as per your requirement. Rope is a clever exercise in concealment with a groundbreaking production, and Rear Window is a tense and deliciously filmed thriller. Both star James Stewart.
