The makeup effects in that film are great and Carrey kind of is to.  But nothing beats the Chuck Jones animation, Boris Karloff narration and the deep bass tones of Thurl Ravenscroft, who was also Tony the Tiger.

The Grinch is a guilty pleasure for a LOT of people. Me included.

 

I find Jim Carrey irresistibly hilarious in it. He was still at the top of his game. Regardless of the fact that it wasn't anything like the original book.
