xSabrinax
Never underestimate China ^^ I don't underestimate China. I underestimate Dragons 2 in China. After so much disappointment everywhere it was released. I can't see anything good coming from the other countries. In other words, I've lost hope. I can't even see 500WW. tupek
No market is as disappointing as the domestic tho.
TServo2049
Right, just about every market increased from the first - just not as much as hoped. It opened comparatively better in most OS markets than domestically, but too many markets seem to have been frontloaded. It was probably the same issue as domestic, just to a lesser degree - it was maybe a little too serious to fully break out among family audiences (not to mention the World Cup in Latin America, and opening too close to TF4 in a lot of places). It just didn't underperform/disappoint to as much of a degree OS as it did domestically. Let's remember that the first one only made $277M OS; in comparison Kung Fu Panda 2, which was the same kind of disappointment domestically but made $500M OS, was coming off of an original which already made $416M OS (without having 3D).The most optimistic pre-release OS predictions for HTTYD2 would have required it to nearly double the original; if Despicable Me 2 hadn't done that last year, I wonder if early OS predictions for this would have been as high. (And no, I'm not trying to engage in "it was never going to do as well as people thought it would" revisionist history. I'm seriously asking, if not for DM2, would the OS predictions for HTTYD2 have been lower?) Edited July 29, 2014 by TServo2049
tupek
Maybe some of us were very optimistic. I wanted $300m USA - $500m rest of the world (I wanted this to surpass Monsters University). But yes, HTTYD is not a very strong franchise yet, or at least not as some others. Despicable Me was kind of unique plus funny enough to GA, and it almost doubled its numbers WW. (I suppose Rio 2 couldn't because it was more like a very generic animal-centric comedy which has been made countless times before). I think that was the problem a lot of us didn't want to see, and this 4 and a half year lapse didn't certainly help too much in most of markets. Besides: I'm seriously asking, if not for DM2, would the OS predictions for HTTYD2 have been lower?) Yes, some people raised the numbers after that. But the more reasonable people warned us (and I thought they were right) that the Minions were more popular and more appealing than anything from HTTYD2. And its true. Who knows. Maybe this is doing strong numbers for the kinds of animation it is. Maybe this is the scope its box office numbers can be. World Cup? Very competitive summer? I don't know, maybe those were factors of why this couldn't gross more, or maybe they weren't.
Kalel009Shel
Germany,Austria,South korea next week Ash keep your fingers crossed no way can our Dragon film lose by 200M to Mal. Come on Toothlesss!!
BK007
I know this could be a moot point, but anyone think it would have done better if it was not titled "How to Train Your Dragon 2"? The first didn't have that many admissions, so the sequel could have grabbed people who never saw the first. Maybe like "How to Raise Your Dragon" or something. chimpo
That is ridiculous. Seriously a movie will make $500M+ WW, it will make tons of $ on DVD, BR, VOD, toys, games, TV show etc.

chimpo
Yeah, it's actually more accurate for this movie then just How to Train Your Dragon 2, because nobody was training their dragons in this movie.
FrozenUnicorn
Master Dragonrider or something I actually love that title way more than HTTYD2. Especially since, as said above, no one's training their dragons in this movie.
BK007
HTTYD2 is a dumb title. I think the animated studios need to call their sequels something more original than "2" and "3". Shrek the Third/Forever After and even Dawn of the Dinosaurs/Continental Drift are better than "2". I know it doesn't affect BO much but still I like it when they have subtitles or are entirely different a la Batman Begins/Dark Knight.

Make people judge the film before watching it. The sequel of "How to Train Your Dragon" in the book series has a different title: "How to be a Pirate".
