Best Historical Epic of Modern Times? (pre 1900's)

Hmmm. Probably between Gladiator and KOH DC for me. But I've never seen Apocalypto, and haven't seen Braveheart in years.

Gladiator, though Last of the Mohicans and Kingdom of Heaven DC are right behind it.

 

Braveheart and Apocalypto are very good.

 

Don't really care for Lincoln, Last Samurai, or Troy.

 

300, Alexander, and King Arthur are awful.

Would not call Mohicans an epic. Run time is under 2 hours and it's more of a lean, mean adventure film in its pacing anyways.

That film has gotten better over time...

 

The epic scale is done in such a beautiful, no historical epic since compares.

While Gladiator is a great movie, The Last Samurai was a better one.

It's between Gladiator. It may not even be a great film but it has some great moments. I've always wondered if Gladiator would be as good if it didn't have that epic score lol.

But if we consider Mohicans an epic then we must also consider Master & Commander one as well, and that is one fucking hell of a movie. Beats every film in the poll (some much more handily than others).

Gladiator actually is getting more liked over time, it recently broke into the IMDB top 50 now. 

 

 

Gladiator is no doubt elevated by the following...

 

1. The score, it is one of the most popular and best selling scores.

2. The acting by Russell Crowe is what makes him famous till this day, Connie played a very powerful and likable women, and the Phoneix started his career off that role.

3. The story, simple revenge.

4. Grand setting and beautiful shots which even till this day with CGI and such still look amazing.

5. The dialogue, its old school but its great stuff.

Gladiator has some fair holes in it, but it's great entertainment with compelling characters and strong technical support.

Gladiator's biggest flaw is historical as they make everything is fine but in reality the death of Commodus begins the decline of the Roman Empire.

Pretty much. Once Marcus Aurelius died the Empire never really recovered save for a brief spurt with Diocletian and Constantine.

The movie pretty takes place pretty much at the end of the peak of the Roman Empire.
