The Stingray

Top 25 'Best Picture' Winners of All Time | DEADLINE: Jan 15, 2014

Recommended Posts

It's my criteria.  I'm kinda marching to the beat of my own drum here.

Oh k. Thnx.

Clearly better than No Country For Old Men. There is no denying that. But, I still say that out of the nominated movies, Juno is the choice.

I am only picking from what was actually nominated. I am not picking what I believe is the best movie for the year. If I was, then clearly Mr. Brooks should have been the winner. It was just superb. A true gem.

I don't actually know how to respond to that. Well I suppose at least you didn't think Atonement deserved to win.

Okay provisional top 25 if I do not see any other films before deadline (or rewatch any of the ones in the list and change my opinion)

1- 1991 - "The Silence of the Lambs"

2- 1994 - "Forrest Gump"

3- 1976 - "Rocky"’

4- 1993 - "Schindler’s List"

5- 1995 - "Braveheart"

6- 2010 - "The King's Speech"

7- 1943 - "Casablanca"

8- 1997 - "Titanic"

9- 1988 - "Rain Man"

10- 2008 - "Slumdog Millionaire"

11- 1957 - "The Bridge on the River Kwai"

12- 1962 - "Lawrence of Arabia"

13- 1999 - "American Beauty"

14- 1981 - "Chariots of Fire"

22- 1990 – Dances with Wolves

23- 1939 – Gone with the Wind

24- 1982 – Gandhi

25- 1973 – The Sting

And the worst...

1989 - "Driving Miss Daisy" - One of the most boring things I have ever seen and its a shame I forgot about this when making my list for Iceroll's vote.

2003 - "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" - Won purely because the first two films were amazing and the Academy held off awarding them so it could do the end trilogy clean sweep thing.

2002 - Chicago - In general I hate most musicals - this is a massive example of why

1965 – The Sound of Music - The original reason I hated musicals, this was shoved down my throat so many times and each time it was worse than before

1996 – The English Patient - Just plain dull

Does Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927) count? At the very first ceremony,

Sunrise won the award for Unique and Artistic Production and Wings won the award for Outstanding Picture (now known as Best Picture), these two categories at the time were seen as equally the top award of the night intended to honor different and equally important aspects of superior film making. The next year, the Academy dropped the Unique and Artistic Production award, and decided retroactively that the award won by Wings was the highest honor that could be awarded.

Some still consider it one of the Best Picture winners, so I wanna clear that up. It would definitely be in my top 5 if it was eligible.

Don't think so. Says on Wiki that Wings won.

Also, is there a deadline on this?

Nothing set in stone. Say 2 more weeks, something like that. Sound good?

We have relatively similar taste. Except Million Dollar Baby as your worst? What do you dislike so much about it?

I need to see Bridge on the River Kwai and Chariots of Fire, always meant to.

I'm assuming that we're assessing these movies solely on their own merits? In other words I'm guessing that we won't be taking into account how "deserving" they were in their particular year in comparison to other films.

I think it depends on your own preference. I'm judging movies on their own merit but Baumer's judging on a mix of that and how deserving they were.
