The Stingray

Top 25 'Best Picture' Winners of All Time | DEADLINE: Jan 15, 2014

Recommended Posts

Looks like I saw this just in time!  I love the comments about various movies that "should have won" and how "the Academy got it wrong".   We place great importance on awards...until we don't agree with them.   ...Then suddenly the awards are worthless.   Amazing how we all have a different list....even though most still cling to the idea that we can rank movies according to quality.

But....making a list is fun!   Here's mine.   The ones I enjoyed the most.  I don't believe in ranking a movie highly if I don't enjoy it so there won't be any of that "I know this is a great movie even though I hated it" stuff on my list.

1-Casablanca

2-Gone with the Wind

3-The Sting

4-Amadeus

5-Unforgiven

6-Mutiny on the Bounty

7-All About Eve

8-The Best Years of Our Lives

9-One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest

10-Schindler’s List

11-Forest Gump

12-Titanic

13-It Happened One Night

14-All Quiet on the Western Front

15-Million Dollar Baby

16-Rain Man

17-LOTR: Return of the King

18-Terms of Endearment

19-Rocky

20-The Sound of Music

21-Marty

22-A Beautiful Mind

23-Slumdog Millionaire

24-My Fair Lady

25-The Apartment

My 5 worst:

1-The English Patient

2-Chariots of Fire

3-Lawrence of Arabia

4-Ordinary People

5-Gladiator

Exactly.

The Dark Knight has the legacy of being the film that expanded the nominee list.  And TDK should have won best picture easily imo.

Never quite bought into that claim.   They thought so much of a movie they didn't nominate that they decided to expand the list....so they can include more movies they really don't think are worthy?   If they thought TDK was that great...wouldn't 5 spots be more than enough to get it a nomination?

It's a dubious legacy to have even if it were true.   "Responsible for lowering the bar to include popular movies that had no chance at a nomination before but might help TV ratings if we pretend they have a shot in hell at being the BP winner"

I think the Academy should still be embarrassed that Crash beat Brokeback Mountain. Crash was great, but come on. These are the only ones I like:2005 - "Crash"2004 - "Million Dollar Baby"2002 - "Chicago"1997 - "Titanic"1994 - "Forrest Gump"1991 - "The Silence of the Lambs"
