2014 Academy Awards: The Official Thread (ALL NOMINEES IN THE FIRST POST)

Recommended Posts

Yeah, it seems like one of those years where the SAG winners all end up being Oscar winners. (It's rare, though - this century it's only happened in 2004, 2009 and 2010). It's possible that JLaw upsets but not very likely, and as much as I'd like Leo to pull a Waltz (not nominated by SAG because the movie wasn't ready until very late; wins Oscar anyway) it looks even less likely. The big question marks this year are the main two categories, not the acting ones.

Interesting bit of trivia I found: 13 years ago, Benicio Del Toro won SAG for Lead Actor (for Traffic), upsetting Crowe for Gladiator, while Albert Finney won Supporting for Erin Brockovich. At the Oscars, BDT was nominated for Supporting and won there, leaving Finney without an Oscar, while Crowe won Best Actor. I must say I like the way SAG was thinking a lot more.

Hmm, it's interesting that because Leo was left out at SAG and McConaughey was left out at BAFTA they won't go against each other until the Oscars. If Leo surprises and wins at the BAFTAs I'd say there's a chance of an upset but otherwise McConaughey's got this.

If you go on ADF, they have a list of who won with what, and it's pretty evident, especially since 2003 that the BAFTAs are by far the most important. In very close years (like 07 Supporting Actress) BAFTA always wins. And the BAFTA + Something else combo is usually more potent than whatever your contender's having. The BAFTA is only not that important when the main contender is ineligible. See Sandra Bullock and I think Swank in 04.

But ADF is also a nest of insanity and willful blindness with their reasonings and justifications for shit.

But they also seem to do better than all of us year after year. They're surprisingly accurate (more so than pundits) considering their antics.

And i'm not commenting on their analysis. I'm just going off the list they compiled.

And here is the list with some added commentary par moi:

This is the other version of the "Who got nominated with what list" only this time it's about those who won already.

Some things:
1. This covers from 2000 (Gladiator year) to 2012 (so far) because that's the first year where BAFTA ceremony happened before the Oscars.
2. 2000 has an asterisk beside it since that year, the BFCA still didn't release nominees but only winners.
3. I only listed those who ended up getting Oscar nominated. So you won't find names like Bill Nighy in Love Actually, Robert Downey Jr in Sherlock Homes among others her.e
4. I did not count the new BFCA Best Actor and Actress Comedy categories since unlike the Globes, comedy performances can still get nominated (and win) in their main Best Actor and Actress awards.

Hope this helps!

When you have nothing to do on a Sunday night:

The Wreck of the "Oscar For Reford"

(to the tune of Gordon Lightfoot's The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald)

The legend lives on, from the heart of Tinsel Town

in the heat of the academy's season,

The show, it is said, is where all the stars go,

when they pander to taste for good reason,

With a powerful role, full of wonderful soul,

it was said that Redford would win gold,

But on morning 16, a shot pierced through the dream,

in a tale that has left my heart cold.

Robert Redford was a man, who had the power to stand,

as a jack of nearly any trade.

He was a master of the act, in the front and the back,

just look at all the films that he made.

Then "All Is Lost" hit, and we said, "Holy shit!"

This man was a lock for the win.

To the theaters, it came, but received little gain,

yet he was still sure to get in.

Spaghetti joined the hype on a Saturday night,

leaving his art house theater blown away,

He told all his friends, without revealing the end,

of this new cinematic foray.

Then Sam came long, and acab joined the song,

Even though more theaters didn't come through,

Then Baumer gave bank, giving it a high rank,

Goph, Jake, Tele Tauriel, too.

The love was so great, almost no one could hate,

on this quietly masterful tale.

Yet one can't help but fear, as Oscar season grew near,

that the film might just possibly fail.

The hype was so high, cause he made people cry,

the S.S. Oscar for Redford was sailing,

But trouble soon would creep, in an upcoming week,

which would leave every one of us flailing.

The SAG made the call, sending shock across the hall,

that Redford's name received no mention,

Silently I hoped, that I had just been too doped,

and when sober I'd see the correction.

Hope quickly returned, when nominations he earned,

for the Critic's Choice and Golden Globe prize,

We silently prayed, but soon became amazed,

by a rival film that called forth our eyes,

Marty's latest pic, showing Leo as a dick,

had us calling "Give him the award."

The buzz he entailed, also with Christian Bale,

was like a piercing strike with a sword.

The 16th soon came, "Best Actor" said by name,

the answer revealed in a few.

First the actor from Hustle, Dern then did the bustle,

with a deep fearful breath from the crew .

Leo scored a spot, though he earned what he got,

it seemed that all would really be lost.

In a minimal shock, Matt and Chiwey the locks,

took the spaces with Redford as cost.

The ship, she soon fell, straight into hell,

though the nominees were rather straigtforward,

But I cannot help, but to let out a yelp,

for the S.S. Oscar for Redford.

Great eulogy, Spaghetti. I still blame you for everything though.

he has a better chance than leonardo dicaprio that's for sure.

Now you're just wrong. Ejiofer's character is a little bit too passive to win. If it ends up being a fight, it'll probs be between McC and Leo. I don't really see anyone elseh aving a chance.
