Ghost in the Shell | March 31, 2017 | Scarlett Johansson | Paramount | New Trailer on page 43!!!

Recommended Posts

Saw this in "IMAX" 3D today and enjoyed it. Yes, I'm a big fan of the 1995 film and no, this version isn't as good, but it's also by no means bad.  Scarlett does a nice acting job as does Binoche, the director tells the damn story, and the SFX are pretty good.

627/1000. Recommended for the big screen.

Let this be a warning to never count your tomatoes before Americans get ahold of them.

Didnt same happened with Warcraft? It started somewhere in 60-70? Ended up in 20-30?

Doctor Strange had just as intense heat over its whitewashing, and that ended up with 90% on RT.

It was helped that they at least changed the character from male to female.   So that got the anti-males onboard and muted the hate.

Trying to figure out how much to add to the score to account for the reviewers who were going to hate it no matter what.   Gotta be at least 10-20%.   Have to filter out the agenda opinions which are of no use to me.

Says movie is racist!

She always have some of the weirdest opinions about female characters in movies out there. She basically seems to hate most of them and always for a different nitpick.

On the issue of "racism" as it is discussed in US/Euro mainstream circles, this is almost exclusively an upper-middle-class thing in the West where the people complaining about "racism" the whole time seek to advertise their sophistication/education by allegedly being able to locate even the most subtle hint of "racism" in any socio-cultural setting. It's also a derivative way of saying that still everything revolves around what white westerners do, with everyone else essentially being an object of manipulation and exploitation. It's as naive as it is hypocritical. As for the movie itself and the casting of Scarlett Johansson as "Major", it's astonishing that this is even being discussed as the original anime character looks far more like a European/white American than Japanese (Major even has blue eyes in the original) How people pretend to not have noticed this is beyond me. Moreover, Scarlett Johansson is one of the two/three biggest female stars around the globe today, no Japanese actress can boast a fraction of a fraction of her fame and box-office draw.

As for Grace Randolph, she really is totally hit-and-miss with her critique of movies. She also does seem to be extra-harsh on beautiful, young female leads. I remember her ripping into J-Lawrence and Brie Larson as well. But to be fair, she is quite tough on male stars as well, especially when it comes down to judging their BO performance. Grace seems unaware of the fact that it is no longer possible for any star (male or female, young or old) to single-handedly carry a movie to BO success.

She also seems to hate the way Scar-Jo chose to walk when portraying "Major" For me that was one of the best parts of the movie, and a brilliant way for the actress to convey the robotic/inhuman aspect of her role.

A much better appraisal of the film was produced by Dan Murrell (even though I liked it much more than he did) who thinks that the movie is pulled down by the fact that while what the original anime did in 1995 was groundbreaking back then, it is by now a cliche as we have seen it in countless movies every since (especially Matrix) The producers of this film failed to push the envelope a little bit more and go for something truly original in this film. They simply got too comfortable and self-restricted themselves by shadowing the original excessively. In matter of fact, quite a few scenes are drawn directly from the original, and while some of them are absolutely gorgeous, it becomes a bit excessive through the duration of the film.

As for the inane and frankly artificial "whitewashing" controversy, this is what the actual Japanese think about it:

That video is so sad, the truth is that when push comes to shove asians will throw any other race except for white under the bus and grovel to their white masters, they value and pretty much worship white people, so this is not surprising at all that they don't find it problematic.

Isn't that grating cuckoo that barked about anti-DC conspiracies fomented by the secret protocol of Disney/Marvel shadow cabinet shills or somethin' a year ago around BvS release?

She's the Alex Jones of Youtube flunkies passing off as movie critics.

Well, drawing got seriously stalled in US. Besides, she never opened shit except Lucy so that was way prematurely to crown her a legit draw. One movie that was more about a concept than anything else where recognizable name was added value but hardly the main reason to see the movie.

There's this annoying trend of prescribing drawing power to actors who appear in franchise movies where franchise itself is the biggest draw. And rushing to confirm the status after just one non-franchise hit. To be Bullock, Leo, Cruise, Denzel, Will, etc one has to have at least 5 movies sold on their name, the more varied genres the better. Not this Lucy and nothing else shit.

The poster for Lucy was Scarlett's face with her name written on her own face.

She was the draw.
