Plain Old Tele
Roger Christian makes Welles and Bay look like Spielberg and Curon. Also, what is she looking at? You mean Academy Award winner Roger Christian*, as the BATTLEFIELD: EARTH promo material would have you know. * this is true, but they conveniently left out the fact it was for Set Decoration on STAR WARS. mattmav45
Why are we arguing popularity? That's not a major determining factor, honestly. When Spielberg is the #1 director on this list and Nolan is in the Top 10, it's fairly obvious that popularity is the main factor driving this list.IMO.

Plain Old Tele
Double post.Still, this list is popular as fuck.IMO. Yes, but to a large degree that's because all of us haven't seen much of world cinema or classic movies. There are a bunch of directors I left off my list because I felt I simply hadn't seen enough of their work (or none at all), but who are highly regarded.
vc2002
The way I see it, influence, diversity and major awards recognition should be the determining factors.

My experience with directors previous to the 1980s is pretty limited. It's a slow education process. I can probably count the number of Hitchcock films I've seen on one hand, although what I have seen is quite good.

DAR
I've not seen it. TCM I think is running their Oscar month so there's a great opportunity to catch some great stuff

baumer
My point of reference doesn't go back much further than 1960. I really want to see some of the older classics but I sadly haven't yet.
vc2002
So Spielberg lol. Yes he's definitely in top3 for me.
Squaremaster316
God damn it. Nolan over Miyazaki? Seriously? Like Miyazaki, Nolan hasn't made a bad film. Miyazaki and Paul Thomas Anderson (NOT WS!!!) should have been in the top 10, along with Nolan and Tarantino.
Blankments
This is a nice list, IMO. Giving me some movies to watch definitely
