THE INTERN | 09.25.2015 | Warner Brothers | final domestic gross: $75,764,672

I'm not the first to wonder it, but why does De Niro still make movies? He's worth hundreds of millions, never seems to be enjoying himself and seems to actively avoid quality productions. Why, Bobby?

I mean, you've got to do something.

If that something is working and having people kiss your ass and tell you are amazing...why not?

Not surprised this is doing well.

It's the first major semi-comedic film since July 31st (which slightly underperformed), and the first film to target older women since August 7th (which underperformed).

Everything this fall should benefit from the lack of compelling content in August.

Man From UNCLE? Ricki and the Flash?

Man From UNCLE? Ricki and the Flash?

Man From UNCLE was definitely an action movie - if we're including anything light-hearted/vaguely comedic, sure. But UNCLE's main genre definitely wasn't comedy. The MCU has plenty of comic relief, but I wouldn't consider those primarily comedic in nature.

Ricki released on August 7th so I did mention that.

The Intern being the first major comedy (2,500+ theaters) since Vacation might have been a better way to phrase it. It has minimal competition through all of October and November so it could definitely leg its way to a 4x from even a $18-20 million OW.

You said "semi-comedic". UNCLE is most definitely an action comedy. Go on any movie website, hell even look on Wikipedia, it is categorised by being action and comedy. And Ricki and the Flash is an out and out comedy-drama too.

Anyway I don't disagree with what you're saying, there hasn't been a movie like this for a good few weeks.

This is #1 in Hong Kong and its 4-day weekend is estimated to be equivalent to $33m USD (from USA alone -- $760k USD) and 5-day weekend is being projected at a magnificent $48.4m USD (Monday is a holiday here -- $1.1m USD). User rating is the highest I've seen in the past few years with a 4.8/5 average so far.
