Lady in the Van topped the week even though Deadpool had a weekend some 500k ahead initially by the end of the week LITV had caught it up and .....

Very strong mid week (must be skewing older i'd say... much older)

Deadpool should pass 40m sometime in the next week (my guess is about tuesday at this point, but if it manages another good hold then it could be sooner.)  Should end it's run not far from 45m is my thought though i think the upcoming competition could finally cut it's legs.

The Revenant should manage to pass 20m now (I thought it might fall short but it's had a boost during the week as it creeps closer and closer to the mark (I suspect it will close at or just past the 20m mark at this rate.)

Star Wars TFA has finally wound itself down... Still making a reasonable 160k in it's 12th week.  even more impressive when u consider the film has pulled in 93.6m to date.  in the end i think it will just fall short of 94m unless it gets a re-release.  still a fantastic result.. not enough to unseat avatar, but we finally have a film that has split the james cameron films......

So far The Lion King has pulled the best result of the Disney Re-Releases. Now for the real test.  is Frozen a classic and join the likes of BATB, Aladdin and the TLK which is what disney is hoping here..  I wouldn't be surprised to see Frozen make the most of the 4 re-releases here, but we'll know soon enough.

.....

so

The Lady in Van continues is strong run ... only down 20%.  Deadpool is now tracking for around 45m i believe with that number (it will pass 40m during the week - fantastic result for a film which i had pegged for about 15m before the opening)  Gimsby... firstly i'm going to lol at the stateside opening... but just  at the opening here... 1.6m (thats like 16m stateside).   For a film that has been so widely panned, for it open to 1.6m here is just .. i have no word... maybe us aussies have a weird sense of humor...   anyway moving, to the even bigger shock... 10 Cloverfield Lane only managed 1.5m.  I was expecting >> 2m and quite possibly above 3m.... that opening is just very disappointing. and to be beaten by grimsby also... wow

HTBS will wind up north of 10m which a good result.  Other things of note, The Revenant looks like it will creep past 20m at this point.  TFA will slip just short of 94m....

Finally Frozen - while ok, i'd say that result in comparison to the other disney re-releases was a little disappointing. i'm wondering if a little of its thunder got stolen by zootopia in preview mode...

Here's a photo of the George St Cinemas in 1967.  The current Event Cinemas George St is where it says Rapallo.  You can see Paramount obscured by the traffic light.

Deadpool has cracked AUD40m.  It's in the top 20 all time and the only comic book films to have grossed more are The Avengers, TDK and the TDKR.  It has a good shot of passing TDKR.

@JJ-8 What's your impression of BvS pre sales and number of session times?  Both seem incredibly low.

Sydney IMAX has only 4 sessions on opening day whereas TFA had 9 straight over the first 27 hours. None of the 4 sessions have sold what TFA had already sold 2 months out.

I looked at various Event Cinemas and they have only 1 midnight session or none at all. Less then 20% of the seats have been sold for the midnight sessions.  Event George St has 1 VMAX session at midnight with about 20% of the seats sold. TFA had 2 x VMAX, 4 x Gold Class plus another 2 or 3 other sessions at midnight. The VMAX and Gold Class were all sold out weeks in advance.

Looking around the country I only found a few Gold Class sell outs on the Thursday night.

Just looking @ Chermside....

Midnights:

Vmax (All 3D) (2 cinemas - 640 seats) - 90% full

Gold class (All 3D) (2 cinemas - 80 seats) - SOLD OUT

normal cinemas (2 x 3D) (> 600 seats) - 65% to 70% full

normal cinema (1 x 2D) (~ 200 seats) - 80% full

of note - Chermside has put on 3 am sessions too - 1 x Gold Class + 1 x Vmax - gold class is about 70% full and the vmax has only sold about 20 tickets so far.. but that wasn't on sale from day dot...

good signs....

For BvS Chermside has 1 VMAX with about 40% sold and 2 x Gold Class with just over 50% sold.

It's where I expected it to be.  i never expected lots of sellouts at this point. My gut says an opening in the 12m to 14m is where this will land.  Above 14m would be a great performance.

I also think it will be on about 650 screens.

That amount of sales this far from opening is give or take fairly in line with other blockbusters that opened in the 13m to 15m range. Except I see that total spread over 5 days. Hence my expectation of a 12 to 14 weekend (4 day).

To be fair to BVS nothing has ever come close to what TFA did in presales or eventual sales on OW. Mybe potter is a tad closer given it pulled a 25m 5 day. Still TFA's presales and ow / OD records are the new yardsticks.

Actually the current site is everything from end of The Regent through the Rapallo. The land  between Paramount & Rapallo became Hoyts Centre 7-plex in late 70's. the Rapallo/Paramount got demolished (late 80's) and replaced with  GU 4-plex, cinema 3 in the GU 4-plex was roughly modeled after the Paramount(its now been carved into 2 cinemas, what is now known as cinemas 10&11) and then GU/Hoyts complexes merged with more cinemas carved up

Will Deadpool reach top 10 all time? (If it hasn't already)

I think Crocodile Dundee is now number 10 with $47.71m so I would say the answer is no.  Jajang hasn't updated the first page of the thread with TFA yet.

Here's the same spot today before BvS.  Event Cinemas George St is the highest grossing complex in Australia.  The bank on the corner is the same building but is now a KFC.  The Regent Theatre is now the Lumière Residences.  Event Cinemas is the next low rise silver building on the right of the street.  You can see the top of the "V" behind the trees.

I intend on sleeping in tomorrow so I would greatly appreciate opening day numbers when I wake up. Thank you.
