Abysmal Sunday, with drops all around. Pets 2 dropped in the high 30's from last weekend, mid-40's for Dark Phoenix and high 40's for Aladdin. And Godzilla...oh well. Even Dark Phoenix will beat it.

Another weekend down (-8.74%) from the same weekend last year. 2019 is still above 2018, by 4.93%.

Pets 2 barely makes it to 100K admissions. The hold is fine, though a little underwhelming. Remember that in Italy movies often get their best hold either in their 2nd or 3rd weekend. It should male 1M+ over the next 10 days, and then drop quickly once the 4th weekend and TS4 arrive.

Dark Phoenix held pretty well, especially when compared to the general OS drops. Today it is passing the lowest grossing SH movie since 2000 (Fantastic 4), will certainly pass Green Lantern and has at least a (very small!) shot at saving some face by not being the lowest gross of the franchise.

Ghost Rider > 2,95

X-Men: First Class > 2,75

Green Lantern > 2,36

Fantastic 4 (2015) > 1,81

Aladdin gets its first sub-50% drop, although just barely. Legs have been pretty bad, though we only have to blame the heat. Cinderella is still a target, but it's becoming less and less likely.

Of course the movie is still a success, with over 2.2M admissions at the end of its run. But if one looks at the original's tickets sold, he could get a bit depressed:

Aladdin (2019): 2.2M+ admissions

Aladdin (1992): 7.194M admissions

The first Aladdin would adjust to about 50M euros...

Not much to say about the rest. Except that Endgame is now out of the top 20 and has ended its run with a fantastic 29.74M (about 3% above Bohemian Rhapsody in euros, 3% below in admissions). The 28.9M amassed by Bohemian Rhapsody was NOT enough to win the season. The only movie that could beat it this year is The Lion King, but it's released in August and therefore in the 2019/20 season.

This week:

* Child's Play > should win the weekend with maybe 100K admissions or so

* Stockholm (...), Fate/Stay Night 2 (Japanese animation) and 5 (FIVE!) local failures.

The top 4 is all Disney. If TS4 is successful enough, the studio could own the whole top 5, but I have a feeling Toy Story will go sub-10M.

Can't believe Pets 2 will finish with half of HTTYD3's gross when it was supposed to be a contender for the podium.

This summer surely began in the worst of all possible ways.

For months and months and months moviegoers have been seeing basically the same trailer about "the biggest summer season ever", which was supposed to turn summer into a more profitable period (well - a less disastrous one). Theater owners need that.

The first 4 of these summer titles were:

Godzilla

Rocketman

Dark Phoenix

Pets 2

All of them have been failures of epic proportions. With the exception of Dark Phoenix, all of them will do less than half what they were supposed to do.

The next title is Toy Story 4. I don't want to be negative, but the odds are not in its favours: negative first signs of this "epic" summer season, no 3D, probably no rain, and NO FABRIZIO FRIZZI (beloved showman and dubber of Woody, who died last year).

Toy Story 3

13.687.057 €

1.688.039 admissions

The same admissions now give a total UNDER 11 millions. Ralph 2 sold basically the same number of tickets and despite the boost of Christmas holidays (higher ticket prices) it finished at 10.85M.

True target for Toy Story 4 is Ralph Breaks the Internets (10.85M).

Dark Phoenix passed the Fantastic 4 reboot.

Aladdin crossed the 14M mark (€ 14.015.744) and passed the total admissions of Maleficent (2.176.493 vs 2.173.206), but it's still behind the Jolie movie in gross (of course 'cause of 3D being dead).

Most movies about flat from Monday.

The japanese animated film Fate/Stay Night - those who follow Corpse's Japan thread will remember it - debuts at #4.

Aladdin back to #2. Yesterday I saw it for the third time in the afternoon: 6 other tickets were sold for the showing (including my brother's and my sister's), while in the whole theater there were like 30 people. It's summer, baby!

The Disney LA has now passed Maleficent in euros, too (see post above).

Yet another terrible debut, this time it's Child's Play's turn. When a movie - Slop2 - threepeats after an OW barely above 1M, the theater owners can just go on vacation.

Aladdin was a tad hurt by the screen loss. Not like it has got anything else to ask: it passed Maleficent and it won't pass Cinderella (and the 15M barrier with it). All it can do is to get a high decimal digit after the 14.

Change at the top. After more than 10 days of dominance (lol), Pets 2 loses the 1st place to The Professor, aka Richard Says Goodbye, the 2018 (!) movie starring Johnny Depp (probably the reason it got the first place).

Solid hold for Child's Play.

Drops from previous Thursday:

Pets 2 > -47%

Aladdin > -46%

Dark Phoenix > -51%

The Dead Don't Die > -48%

Il Traditore (It) > -48%

Godzilla > -56%

Il Grande Salto (It) > -62%

No movie will go above 100K admissions, and none will pass the 50K admissions outside maybe the top 3 (but Pets 2 and Child's Play could easily miss the mark). Forky can't come soon enough!

Child's Play passed Pets 2, which should get back the #2 spot today.

If Aladdin jumps high enough today, it will be able to spend one more weekend in the top 3. The fact that it's still following Pets 2 pretty closely despite how movies usually perform since their 4th week here it's pretty amazing.

4 days till Tory Story 4 comes.

There was some rain across Italy, especially on the north, but I wouldn't have never expected to see a jump near 300% (!!!) for Pets 2. The Illumination flick is actually UP (by 17K, or 7%) from last Saturday. Today will decide if it's able to beat Arrivederci Professore over the weekend.

Unfortunately, Aladdin's rise was less abnormal, but it was still enough to remain flat from last Saturday.

Dark Phoenix has now overtaken Godzilla and still has a chance (though very slim) at X-Men: First Class.

Thanks to some rain and storms in the north on Saturday, this weekend is up (+3.13%) from the same weekend last year. 2019 though has lost some ground again because of the weaker weekdays: now up from 2018 by 4.83%.

The Professor managed to beat the Pets and to gain some interest, mostly due to reviews+Depp. It's still a dull opening, which would have looked totally mediocre in literarily every other time of the year. Pretty sure this is the first time this year where no movie is able to get above the 100K admissions over the 4-day weekend.

Pets 2 held very well thanks to its abnormal Saturday rise. I still think this won't come close to 4M though, as Toy Story 4 opens the day after tomorrow and weather this week is going to be all "sun and hot". Even if it managed a 4M finish, though, it would be an epic failure.

Aladdin is the winner of the weekend. It held as good as Pets despite being in its 5th weekend already, and has now a solid chance at becoming the #2 Disney LA. The target is Cinderella's 15.015.486 euros, and it's back to 50/50. If released in late August or december, this could have even beaten Beauty and the Beast.

Dark Phoenix is holding better than expected to be honest. It opened 10% lower than Godzilla, but it's already above it. The movie is still far from a success, but unlike Godzilla and Pets, it didn't miss expectations by like 60%. This is how the bottom of the superhero chart looks like.

X-Men: First Class > 2,75

X-Men: Dark Phoenix > 2.65 (projection)

Green Lantern > 2,36

Fantastic 4 (2015) > 1,81

Child's Play...well, a disaster.

Out of the top 10, Dolor y Gloria is just 5000 euros away from the 3M mark.

This wednesday, Toy Story 4. It's certainly going to drop from Toy Story 3 (13.7M euros, 1.69M admissions) as the same number of tickets sold would translate to less than 11M euros, and as I previously said, the death of Woody's dubber Fabrizio Frizzi can only hurt it. Also, TS3 opened in a marketplace that didn't have 2 family films in the top 3 - and this weekend is looking to be the hottest of the year. Finally, the movie disappointed in Spain, which tends to be the market that behaves more closely to Italy. All things considered, I'm pretty confident the 4th chapter of Woody's adventures will not reach the double-digit gross. My prediction is 2.75M OW and 8.5M total gross (1.3M admissions).

The other toy stories:

gross - admissions - % of theaters covered by Cinetel

€ 4.156.600 - 839.648 - 62% - TOY STORY (1995)
€ 5.084.863 - 984.140 - 67% - TOY STORY 2 (1999)
€ 13.687.057 - 1.688.039 - 91% - TOY STORY 3

Some rough maths and we get 1.2M admissions for TS1, 1.4M admissions for TS2. The % hasn't changed much since 2010, so we can say 1.7M for TS3. Also, nowadays all of the non-counted theaters are the smaller ones, which mean very very little for a blockbuster. In fact, the 100% complete numbers released by SIAE usually add just 1-4% to a movie's total gross.
