ITALY (Botteghino): 'Minions 2' on course to become biggest film of 2022

Recommended Posts

Yesterday Cineguru posted an interesting article (link) about the Italian box office after the first 6 months of the year, in particular it reveals that in Rome, Milan, Turin and Bologna the top three was Doctor Strange, The Batman and Top Gun, while in Florence and Naples the first two are the same while in third position there is Fantastic Beasts

Another interesting thing is that while the national top 6 is completed by Jurassic World and Uncharted, taking only the mentioned cities those two are surpassed by Death on The Nile and No Way Home (despite having grossed 80% of its total in December of the past year)

Top Gun 2 continues to gross well and by the end of this week is will probably have passed Minority Report, Top Gun and Rain Man becoming Tom Cruise's third highest grossing film in the country, after the Last Samurai (18M) and War of the Worlds (13M)

Jurassic World 3 had a slightly better drop than expected but the film is basically done for, it won't even be able to get close to the 10 million euros which one month ago was the minimum goal

In the meantime Doctor Strange 2 dropped out of the top 10 for the first time with a total of 13.7M, same for Jujutsu Kaisen 0 which ended its run with 1.11M euros and 120k tickets sold

In other news, UCI Cinemas and The Space announced (link) that they will re-distribuite 5 anime films by studio Ghibli during July and August, each one with a week of screenings. The most interesting is definitely Spirited Away in the first week of July, we'll see how much it will gross

Do these still have Cannarsi's godawful translation? I might actually consider a Princess Mononoke rewatch if not, but if they do, eh, pass.

¿What the hell is wrong with Universal? ¿Why Minnions 2 isn't opening this weekend in Italy?

The release date is 18 August (WTF) ,the last country to release it. France isn't releasing too but is due ^fete du cinema^(discount days), and it's just 1 week late , not a month and a half...

Meantime the Italy box office it's really weak... Friday 01 July: TOP 10 = €280K

1-Elvis 82k    2-Top Gun 50k    3-Lightyear 37k    4-Jurassic World 36k   5 -Chihiro 27k

The reason is that in Italy the summer box office has always been disastrous, and in particular I would indicate the period between June 15th and August 15th. The result is that over the years many try to avoid releasing films during this period, which is instead used to make some re-releases like for example Spirited Away currently fifth in the ranking. Then in this case it makes sense since this is a kids movie and I think in this period it would have flopped, Thor 4 on the other hand shouldn't have too many problems

Also not helping is the sunny days in recent year. In fact, could be one of the sunniest summer in recent years that hit most of the European, especially Spain and  italy. TGM suboptimal performance here and Spain reflect that impact.

4.0 / 5.0 - MoviePlayer

8.0 / 10 - Everyeye

2.5 / 5.0 - Cinematografo

6.5 / 10 - Today Italy

7.5 / 10 - MangaForever

Everyeye are marvel fanboys like always 😅, anyway I also add MyMovies which gave a 3.5 out of 5 while the critics were less kind with an average of 2.6 out of 5

In addition to Thor 4's satisfying debut (let's see if it manages to reach 10M), the other interesting news is that the re-release of Spirited Away ends with an excellent €300k for a 1.5M total. The updated list of the highest grossing anime movies in Italy therefore becomes:

1) Capitan Harlock - 5.1 million

2) Pokemon: Mewto Strikes Again - 4.7 million (for Cinetel) or more correctly over 9 million (for Siae)

3) Pokemon 2 - 3.1 million (or over 6 million for Siae)

4) Stand By Me Doraemon - 2.6 million

5) Dragon Ball Super: Broly - 2.5 million

6) Spirited Away - 1.5 million

7) Doraemon Movie n. 34 - 1.3 million

8)Doraemon Movie n. 35 - 1.2 million

9) Jujutsu Kaisen 0 - 1.1 million

10) Howl's Moving Castle - 1 million

11) The Wind Rises - 1 million

12) Dragon Ball Z: The Battle of the Gods - 930k in just two days

"Corro da Te" also reappears in the daily top 10 after two month of absence and a total now close to 2.4 million euros, which at the moment for an Italian comedy with famous actors is a really good result but just 3 years ago it would have been considered a hopeless flop...
