May 27/2020 article featuring Geoff Burdick senior VP of Production Services and Technology at Lightstorm. The article is a good look behind the scenes at the tech they are using for the sequels.

Snippet of the article (see link for a lot more)

Now, IBC365 has secured an exclusive interview with Geoff Burdick, senior vice president of Production Services & Technology for Lightstorm Entertainment.

“The technology has advanced leaps and bounds at every conceivable level since the first Avatar,” says Burdick who worked on the original. “We are shooting higher resolution than the first and at higher frame rates and still in 3D. Three years ago, when we were looking for production technology, we knew these were our parameters but not exactly what the solution was.”

Much of the original team returns, including Weta Digital as the film’s VFX vendor, Joe Letteri as lead VFX supervisor and editors John Refoua and Stephen Rivkin. Russell Carpenter, who shot Cameron’s Titanic, is cinematographer on both Avatar 2 and 3.

Performance capture of the lead actors - including Kate Winslet, Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington and child actor Jack Champion - was completed as early as November 2018. This took place on a volume capture stage ringed by cameras recording data in 360-degrees. The last phase of live action photography is being completed now.

For all these years I was sure it will beat the first Avatar results, but now... even if the covid will be only a bad memory, a the cinemas will be open, I'm afraid this hole pandemic time will have effect on A2 bo run. I'm not sure if $2B are possible anymore :/

Will the sequels be shot in native 4k ? And will the movies be completely in IMAX meaning whole movie shot in IMAX ?

The movie is shot digital so no IMAX 65 or 70mm shooting going on (that imply huge, very impractical camera, shooting 3d with them not sure if it is possible, if it is it must start to be extremely complicated and for short take).

IMDB can often have some info about those question:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1630029/technical

It seem the movie will have (a la nolan), 3 different aspect ratio going on:

1.78 : 1
1.85 : 1
2.39 : 1

2.39 is your regular cinematic wide screen range (the 2.35-2.4 to 1), 1:85 is your standard 16:9 widescreen television, most regular tv, series, video games use it with 1.78 not to far from it, maybe it is not yet up to date but no very squary Imax.

Master format is regular 4K according to imdb, no Fincher going with 6K funny thing going on, with this camera:

Piling on the bad news, this time from Disney.....

Disney delays 'Mulan' indefinitely, Star Wars and Avatar movies pushed back a year

Disney is making some major changes to its release calendar that include displacing “Mulan” from its Aug. 21 release and pushing back the debuts of future Star Wars and Avatar by a year.

On Thursday, the company said that theater closures and production shutdowns during the global coronavirus pandemic caused to make a number of adjustments to its slate.

“Over the last few months, it’s become clear that nothing can be set in stone when it comes to how we release films during this global health crisis, and today that means pausing our release plans for ‘Mulan’ as we assess how we can most effectively bring this film to audiences around the world,” a Walt Disney Studios spokesperson said in a statement Thursday.

“Mulan” is currently listed as unset, meaning its release is delayed indefinitely. The company has also pushed back the release dates for three Star Wars movies and four Avatar sequels by one year.

Additional slate changes include:
“The Personal History of David Copperfield” moving to Aug. 28
  • “Death on the Nile” is now debuting on Oct. 23
  • “The Empty Man” will arrive on Dec. 4
  • “The French Dispatch” is unset
  • “Antlers” is now dated Feb. 19, 2021
  • “The Last Duel” will arrive Oct. 15, 2021
  • An untitled Disney Live Action film will take the place of “Avatar 2” on Dec. 16, 2021.
This is a breaking news story. Please check back for updates.

IMDB information like this frequently isn’t accurate or finalized until release. It’s possible the aspect ratios refer to different theatrical deliverables. There’s no final master (or masters) ready yet, obviously.

I am fine with delay, considering the situation over the past few months, I am not sure if 2021 Dec date will help unleashing the box office potential of A2, even if the situation completely recovers by then; the global box office market (if it doesn't start to progressively decline) will need some time to fully revitalize.

I will be there opening night, that is something I can always hold on to😂

btw, once this is all over, before the new 2022 date, they should still do a global re-release of Avatar at some point.

Box office reports twitter says 2022 is the new release.

My speculations is that it could be ready in time but Jimbo wants to re-release Avatar in December and he's not able to this year anymore.

2021 Dec - Avatar re-release

2022 Dec - Avatar 2

2024 a3

26 a4
