That's because the movie (possibly) does not cover the entire width of the IMAX screen unlike other movies like example Dune, Just like the first Avatar possibly the frame is smaller on IMAX so as the image is smaller is better viewing angles here is a capture of the Way of Water in IMAX AMC Universal Citywalk. Note how it does not cover the width, non 1.43:1 IMAX probably do not cover the width either. way-of-water-pillar-boxing-on-a-1-43-dua

That looks like the projector isn’t set up correctly, I saw it on a 1:90:1 IMAX 3D screen and it filled the entire thing.

No. The projector is set correctly, is the same on 1.90:1 if the projector is well calibrated, that is done for viewing angles. James Cameron did this with the original Avatar. The thing is in 3D you do not notice. An IMAX projectionist confirmed it. Here is an IMAX Projectionist in the first picture confirming it.

The second is an IMAX 70mm film print of the first Avatar. Confirming James Cameron does this for Better Viewing Angles in IMAX. zyVfri5.pngs-l1600.jpg

Well it definitely wasn’t like that in my theatre. It 100% filled the entire screen at my screening last Friday. The Avatar re-release back in September filled it too, I remember taking note of it because of how I remember it having windowboxing borders like in your screenshot when I saw it back in 2009 on a regular screen. Maybe it has something to do with the seating in a particular theatre, I know the Cineworld I go to doesn’t actually sell the bottom 4 rows in the IMAX if it’s a 3D showing because it’d be extremely uncomfortable, so the windowboxing isn’t necessary.

No, it was like that i updated my post so you see the proof. You just did not notice because of the 3D but it was like that.

I don’t know what to tell you, I used to be a projectionist myself at the Cineworld that I watched it at, and believe me, I would have noticed if it didn’t fill the screen. It definitely did, there was no pillarboxing whether I had my glasses on or not, when I lifted my glasses up, it still filled the screen left to right and top to bottom, there were no borders. Same goes for the remaster of A1.

I can only imagine that it depends on the actual size of the screen as to whether there’s any pillarboxing implemented. From memory of my holiday in Florida a few years back, the IMAX at Universal Citywalk isn’t particularly big so maybe that has something to do with it. The one I watched it at in the UK is at least triple the size of the Citywalk one.

A lot of times projectors are a bit zoomed in beyond the screen and a 16:9 or 1.85 in a 1.90 container aint much so is possible that is what happened. But for a fact all IMAX DCPs for Avatar 2 have slight pillarboxing on a 1.90:1 container that is what IMAX uses.

IMAX don’t zoom, they calibrate each auditorium differently based on the size of the screen/auditorium, so it’s likely that the screen I watched it on was just the right size to fill the screen whereas yours wasn’t which is why you had the borders and I didn’t. The size of the borders on your screenshot would definitely have been noticeable on the screen I saw it on. If I see it again before the end of its run I’ll try to get a picture.

For what it’s worth, the only time I’ve seen lettboxing on a full frame IMAX film in that screen was with Jurassic World back in 2015, which was 2.00:1 in a 1.90:1 container.

I Know IMAX calibrate their projector daily, Russian Cinemas can not even operate the IMAX projectors because of the shut down there. But it does happen that the screen is a bit smaller than the projected image. And Im talking pillarboxing not jurassic world letterboxing. IMAX projectionist have confirmed is a taller aspect ratio inside a 1.90:1 container. 1.85:1 inside a 1.90:1 container is not much.

I believe what you’re saying, and I can see the evidence of it on your screenshot, it must just be down to the size of your screen and the size of the one I saw it on being different.

I really didn't enjoy this. I took a bunch of edibles and watched it at the IMAX, I just wanted to watch some pretty scenery porn and fun spectacle and the movie definitely provided that (my edible started to kick in once they got to the Ocean tribe, all underwater that stuff was gorgeous) but man it's so fucking long and slow and just started to feel like a slog halfway through. I just checked out at a certain point and was honestly tempted to leave. People were audibly sighing and yawning during slower scenes.

I think these are movies where you're either on the train or you're not. If you can buy into the world you'll like it, if not you're in for a long ass 3+ hours. I was in literally in tears laughing uncontrollably during the scene where they're swimming with the whales and talking to them and the one Na'vi goes "She's my spirit sister!" People were looking at me weird and I was trying to stop laughing but whatever I was high.

The scene where the kid is being chased by the giant sea monster was intense af though

Oh I forgot about Spider lmao. Good god what was Cameron thinking. Everything from the writing, casting, costume design, amount of screentime was wrong with this character
