Jem and the Holograms | 10/23/2015

I watched the trailer and thought this was based on some obscure girl band that's only famous on tumblr. Apparently not.

Why are people reacting so negatively to the trailer?

Sophie Campbell, the artist for the new comic, commented about some of the response she's gotten compared to her older TMNT work. The people who are negative about Jem tend to be VERY strongly so. She thinks it might be because for fans of Jem, the original show is IT. There has been literally nothing else for the property since the 80s.

TMNT and Transformers and GI Joe all had new versions of cartoons and comics and toys to keep generating interest and keep the fans of the old series interested. They also mitigated disappointment, because it got spread out over time. Also invariably they could go back and watch those original shows and see that, yeah, they don't really hold up. But it's okay, because there are cool things to take from there and from the more recent adaptations.

With Jem, if you've only got that one childhood connection, it's difficult to see any changes positively. Also, unlike the others, Jem actually was pretty great within the context of an 80s toy commercial cartoon, so there's a higher bar to meet for any adaptation.

It's not that the movie itself looks all that revolting.  Paint-by-numbers tale of fame vs. friendship but it is what it is.  But what it isn't is Jem.  The only thing they've retained of the original is that they're females in a band.  Hopefully you have more of a connection to Transformers (a movie/series that, for all the bitter complaints against it, at least retained the core tenets of the IP) so this makes sense:

Picture if you will a "re-imagining" of Transformers where instead of sentient robots engaged in cosmic warfare, it is instead a grounded story about man-made robots being used to compete in one of those robot battling competitions.  As these robots are inanimate objects, the story now focuses on a father and son.  The mother of this family has recently passed away and they have been growing distant.  Building the robot (let's call it Optimus Prime) for this competition and going through the first few rounds brings them back together and helps them heal as a family for the first time UNTIL "insert whatever here" drives them apart just before the finals.  Wham, bam, standard "love of family conquers all" plot.   That is what this movie is, a re-purposed script with a beloved license haphazardly pasted onto it.

Well, I'm in the vast minority but I kinda liked the trailer. Sure, it looks like a bland Disney Channel film, but I grew up on bland Disney channel films (Camp Rock anyone... love it). So I may actually see this to be honest.

Way to shit on all the fans of the original property, LOL.

I was no Jem fan or anything but I knew of the show when it was on and even caught a couple episodes. This is not that. But even if this had a different name it wouldn't matter as it looks terrible anyway.
