What a run for this movie. I've soured on the movie a bit as I've had more time to think about it (may be time for a rewatch though), but it's been fun following it's run.

Second viewing doesn't hurt. It's a really solid movie. The idea that it's a legitimate Picture and Director contender is crazy to me, though.

The HFPA splits its best picture, actor and actress prizes into the categories of drama and musical/comedy. Since there are typically far more serious-minded contenders than carefree romps, studios and their awards consultants try to wedge the tweeners -- films that could fit in either group such as "Nebraska" and "The Wolf of Wall Street," to name two recent comedy nominees -- into the less competitive group.

The placement of "Joy," which stars frequent Russell collaborator Jennifer Lawrence as a young woman pursuing her piece of the American dream, wasn't surprising. Russell's last two movies -- "American Hustle" and "Silver Linings Playbook" -- competed as comedies at the Globes, with "Hustle" taking the picture prize and honors for Lawrence and costar Amy Adams.

Still, not everyone is happy.

"Trying to dominate the comedy category when you are really a drama afraid of dramatic competition is a punk move," filmmaker Judd Apatow tweeted last month, reacting to the notion of "Joy" being considered a comedy. (Apatow, it should be noted, has a prime comedy contender of his own this year with "Trainwrecked.")

Finding "The Martian" in the comedy category is also raising a few eyebrows around town.Ridley Scott's sci-fi survival tale is surprisingly funny. One of the year's biggest movie laughs comes when Matt Damon's stranded astronaut boldly proclaims: "Mars will come to fear my botany powers!" And Scott makes full use of cast member Kristen Wiig's comedic gifts.

Still, "comedy" isn't the first genre that springs to mind when discussing the film.

And, apparently, some HFPA members agree. "The Martian" made it into the comedy category by just one vote.

Congrats on the Golden Globes, Ridley and Matt. Personally I wouldn't consider it a Comedy but Fox should be pretty pleased.

This is one place where it might backfire honestly. If the HFPA included it in comedy by just one vote, that means there is already a mini backlash among voters, and it will just take a bit of PR to make it a full fledged backlash against the "Not a comedy" nominee and steer voters toward say Trainwreck or Spy instead.

The only thing good about the Globes, aside from people drinking and getting drunk throughout the ceremony, is that it has separate comedy categories for films and performances which mostly get snubbed by the Oscars and every other Awards and critic group. Filling up the categories with films and performances that couldn't make the drama cut stinks just like lead performers shoving themselves into supporting categories because they can't handle the lead competition.

I would  have  lost all respect for the Golden Globes with the nomination of The Martian..as much as I like it...as a comedy, except for the fact I have never had any respect for the Globes. . Yes, the film has humor in it but.come off it, it's a drama. The only people who think this is right are the hopeless fanboys.

That's a major stretch.  A movie being funny doesn't mean it's a comedy.  The films a drama through and through.

Comedy vs Drama has nothing to do with how funny a movie is, it's the approach.  Sometimes you have films that are kind of a hybrid, and so I can see how those go one way or another but the Martian clearly wasn't.

It had a realistic, grounded and dramatic approach, not a satirical and light hearted approach.

There are some elements of comedy in it, but they're most used as a relief to the audience after something dramatic happened and to help the audience not get depressed by what was happening.
