Interstellar / Gravity / The Martian. All three films pretty much got the same ranking for me. I guess you could say I love my space movies, a bit too much.

So yeah, I just saw The Martian, and I thought it was great. Matt Damon was excellent too, and the film had enough humor and serious moments, that it never felt like a bore.

God, it's been ages since I saw 2001.

 

Of the others, I'd put Gravity on top, followed pretty closely by Apollo 13. The Martian is probably a bit ahead of Interstellar and Sunshine.

Yes, it's a drama/romance on board a spaceship. There's virtually no action or spectacle that would draw moviegoers as easily as Martian, Gravity, Interstellar etc.

If by sappy you mean a guy accidentally wakes up early decades before they reach their destination and selfishly wakes up a girl he was attracted to so he won't be alone and then stalks/woos her (and she probably falls for it too).

Yep. The original script is hyper-sexist and the guy is creepy as fuck. Like he's one of those men who will get exposed for 3 minutes on a TV show about sexual predators.
