zackzack
7 years isn't that awful. He hasn't made any truly horrendous films since then. Especially since he had Gladiator and Black Hawk Down in 2000/2001. The Martian and Exodus both seem a lot more ambitious than anything Scott had done since American Gangster. He could pull off a comeback with those two. Exodus seems more ambitious to me because he is tackling a reasonably sacred subject where his work will be incessantly scrutinized. There is also a twist related to the 10 plagues which may disappoint Christian audience. The Martian is based on a book that seems to be a clever survival thriller with little or no pretensions. The script is already laid out in the novel. All Ridley needs to do is bring out the visual.
Plain Old Tele
"Pretentious" is the last word I'd use to describe THE MARTIAN.

kitik
I saw the thread title, and while I definitely like Sean Bean, I was really hoping it would be Mr Bean.
kowhite
There's another movie out there...that has warped my perception of Matt Damon in space. Hopefully I can get past that when I watch this.

kayumanggi
Ridley Scott has wrapped 'The Martian,' one of our 100 most-anticipated films of 2015: http://t.co/yGHSswxcIS pic.twitter.com/oI1Ug8G72G — The Film Stage (@TheFilmStage) March 16, 2015
Empire
I really hope this is finally a return to form for Ridley!
DAJK
I hope it gets the great reception Gravity did (I hope it also deserves its acclaim unlike gravity). I like Scott, and think some of his films (Exodus) are underrated.

DAJK
It doesn't seem much like Gravity at all... "Original" sci-fi, that is told like a survival film. Big name actor and a visual director.
Avatree
"Original" sci-fi, that is told like a survival film. Big name actor and a visual director. 1) Gravity isn't sci-fi 2) Gravity had 2 characters (mostly just 1), this clearly has various people 3) Sandra Bullock isn't in the same league as Matt Damon

GRAVITY most definitely is science fiction. 2. While THE MARTIAN has plenty of supporting characters, a good deal of the story (in the book, anyway) deals with one person struggling to find a way to survive and communicate. A closer (non-SF) comparison is something like CAST AWAY. 3. This is a matter of opinion, of course. Avatree
Great points. Especially point 3. Matt Damon is light years better than Bullock at acting. It's not just acting, but in terms of sheer star power - Matt Damon has had plenty of action hits, Sandra Bullock isn't exactly a massive star. Avatree
1. GRAVITY most definitely is science fiction. I don't see how it could be science fiction under any definition I've come across, unless your definition of sci-fi is "it's in space"
