My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 | March 25 2016 | Script by Nia Vardalos. John Corbett returning. Kirk Jones directing.

The thing about the first is that it obviously appealed to an older crowd.  It also had an incredible run where it hit number 2 in it's 20th week and after that it dropped between 5-10% for something like 4 weeks straight.  I'm not saying this one will come close to those levels.  But, if the trailer is good, the wom is good and it has the same kind of appeal, it could do fairly well.

I feel the same way. Those people who enjoyed the first are still around and although there will surely be a significant drop off, I still think it will interest enough people to make good money. Thistype of movie will look qhite original and fresh compared to most other wide released movies nowadays.

That movie's run wasn't just exceptional it was downright weird. I remember reading a greek cinema magazine at the end os summer '02 which had data from july when the movie had grossed something like 30 mil in limited release in 3 months and the article said that the greek community in US made it such a big success and by the time it opened in Greece in September it had already exploded in America.

It's run was crazy.  It had ONE w/e over $11m and that was Labor Day w/e in it's 20th week. It's w/e PTA hit over $6,000 three times (one on LD w/e) and the other the two w/e after. Over 5 months into it's run. It was truly the little engine that could.

It wasn't the Greek community that made it big, although I'm sure they contributed.

Of course it wasn't but back then in the first few months when it was still in limited release and "just" a very big indie hit it was a logical assumption.

Not really.  A logical assumption was that it was a hit because WOM spread to all kinds of people who had gone through the same experiences the film depicted.

The trailer has every single cliche from a 90s and early 2000s comedy trailer. All that was needed was a record scratch. Looks harmless enough, doubt if it will even earn 10-15% of the first movie's gross domestically.

Huge drop from the first one. I dont know why they even bothered with a sequel, more than a decade later.

I doubt the budget was very high, probably less than 20m. So it's not a huge risk for the studio and should be good counter-programming against BvS.

True. Back in 2002, it seemed like MBFGW was all that everyone in my family (Caucasians of Welsh/French/Polish descent) could talk about. I also remember a Puerto Rican family who lived across our street and also loved the movie.

Hmm I actually really enjoyed the first movie.. and while that new trailer isn't terrible.. it doesn't exactly look great either. and after Dumb and Dumber 2 I take prolonged Comedy sequels with a huge grain of salt. this is going to have huge drop from the first. but yeah the budget probably isn't very big so it could really do anywhere from $50-$100m, and be seen as a success. this just really seems like a cash grab to me.
