Now at Paramount.  Tim Miller is executive producer.  Jeff Fowler (whose only notable work before was VFX work on Where the Wild Things Are) directs.

I'm oddly hyped for this. Sonic was one of, and still is one of my favorite game series, and I think there's decent potential for a fun, lightweight comedy.

Paramount isn't one of those studios that inspire much confidence in me anymore.....but it's Sonic. I'm gonna be there opening day.

I'll see it. I grew up playing most of the Sonic games and watching Sonic X when I was younger.

I didn't play as much Sonic as other people but one of my favorite games when I was really young was Sonic Heroes. I would love to support this for nostalgia.

Honestly, the branch of Sony executives that made decisions like The Emoji Movie need some time to really think before handling a could-go-either-way film like this. I'm happy for Paramount because they've been struggling to find their footing, as they have begun to hold on to the few franchises they have (like Transformers, Star Trek, and Mission Impossible) for dear life. They need something new that will give them confidence to be a tentpole risktaker. Not just a risktaker that does a wide distribution for mother! and Annihilation, but a tentpole risktaker, releasing things like World War Z as a tentpole every now and then.

 

The last thing I would want for Paramount is to be blinded by a foolish desire to bury themselves in a Transformers franchise few people remain interested in.
