Smurfs and Alvin and the Chipmunks shows these kinds of movies can be hits regardless of quality

Name one videogame movie that has done Alvin and the Chipmunks numbers in North America? Detective Pikachu had way better trailers and Pokemon is far more relevant than Sonic today and that film didn't pull in those numbers.

LOL, who the fuck cares how the blue rat looks.

Only good thing in this is the grand return of Jim The God Carrey.

Movie still gonna bomb like a bitch though. Much worse than the other, yellow rat. All the "fans goodwill" won't help a thing.

They should really stop trying to put videogames into movies. They don't belong. Movies are art. Games are for bottom level types with nothing better within their reach.

Credit is deserved where it's due. The people took the extra measure to entirely change the aesthetic of the lead character, and make scenes more vibrant in nature as evident in vast differences shown from both trailers. They replaced the WILDLY out of place "Gangsta's Paradise" with a more fitting song for the tone. In terms of marketing, Paramount listened to fans and did them right. This looks like a better adaptation than Mario Bros, and despite the low bar...they're doing it RIGHT.

Both involve staring at a screen. A fan of one doesn't stand on higher ground than the other.
