Shrek is a beloved property, they only need to make a good movie to have a phenomenal comeback. Hopefully this buy from Universal will change directions creatively so they can manage that.

I want a sequel to Home, though.

I think they need more than one film to reestablish themselves. It took WDAS a few films to get back where they are now

DAE think they're running out of their top tier properties? (read: franchises or would be franchises. Stuff with shows.)

Top Tier: These movies have strong plots and messages, and are not afraid to go darker. Not grimdark, but darker.

  • Kung Fu Panda (which I really doubt we'll see a fourth one. And the show is done too, so unless they move it to Netflix and give us an Avatar type show, I think it's done.)
  • How to Train Your Dragon

Madagascar kind of straddles the line between these two for me.

Second Tier: These movies still have strong plots and messages, but are still mostly lighthearted.

  • Croods
  • Shrek

Lower Tier: They're bright and flashy for the children. Not terrible, but the morals aren't fleshed out and kind of weakly implemented.

  • Peabody and Sherman
  • Trolls
  • Turbo
  • Home

Disney is better at having one movie basically cover a wide scope, but Dreamworks really likes going all out in kind one area.

People aren't surprised by this?

I for one am shocked. The first one was one of their bigger hits the year it came out. It made almost $600M WW. If anything this year showed that animation is being eaten up by folks especially over seas.

I really have no idea what is going on or why it was cancelled but I think it's a dumb decision.

Universal's decision.

Technically true, but the article stated that DWA already had doubts, with two sources saying that Universal was just ratifying a decision already made by DWA.

I think it's less about being surprised and more not really being bothered by it. I like the first Croods, but I don't really see a big need for a sequel. Their story was told. It's fine if there's no more.

This is definitely surprising to me. DWA is in rough shape and The Croods is one of their biggest successes from this decade. My only guess is they fear a worse fate than How to Train Your Dragon 2 and apparently don't think it's worth it. Even though HTTYD2 still made pretty big bank. Weird.

It could be they were having trouble cracking the story so have decided to pull the plug. DWA likely is going to see many cuts under Comcast to reduce costs which likely means projects will be axed.

Maybe I;m cynical or DWA has really turned over a new leaf, but I have a hard time buying they would cancel a sequel due to poor story. I mean this is DWA we're talking about after all.

This isn't the first sequel they've canned, though. Puss in Boots 2 and Madagascar 4 also got the hook.

Perhaps Dreamworks is just so strained of resources now that the only way they could get this out is if they released it as a storyboard slideshow, and make fun of them all you want but I'm sure even they have too much integrity to stoop that low to make a profit

They're seriously making a sequel to a movie no one remembers 7 years later? K.

A sequel to a movie that made a shit ton of money (almost 200M DOM and 600M WW, their 2nd WW highest grossing original film ever, only behind Kung Fu Panda). They have yet to have a bigger success than The Croods since it came out.... other than HTTYD2.

There's also a Netflix show but I wonder if it'll hurt more than help.
