Harry Potter dominated the box office for a decade, there will never be another series like it.

One of these days, I too will watch them all again.  I don't have a wife to bitch at me for watching movies too often. :)

The only way I will probably watch them again is if I had a wife bitching at me to see them  :P

I wonder how soon we'll see the 3D re-release for HP movies. With it I can see at least 5 of them crossing the 1B border.

Hmm...see what I think all of these series have in common, is that their striking of the cultural zeitgeist was strong for their time.

I am pretty sure Twilight books were coming out after the movies began releasing, same as Potter.

So in other words, the audience keeps growing up with the books and hence they remain in popular consciousness. Sure, they will still get fans over the eternal future, but these kids will never have the same experience as those that did whilst they were growing up. Of course, this relates more to Potter, whose books came out in the span of 10 years or so too. That experience will never be replicated again.

The Hunger Games acts more like a traditional adapted franchise since all books are out, and I think the timeframe in actual terms is only 2 years plus. Not sure about Twilight, but Potter is across 7 years. If a 10 year old picked up Potter and read them all, he'd still be 10 when Harry was 18 and he wouldn't understand as well what Potter is going through as strongly.

Even if the other sequels are above 1.5B+ WW, it won't be as consistent as HP and not as many entries.

1.6B+ for the Avatar sequels and it will be more consistent, really its less but I rounded.

I'm not a fan, but I'll admit, it's impressive for a billion dollar franchise to go on for so long with hardly any franchise fatigue. As far as most successful of all time, I think it cpuld be argued that James Bond deserves that title with MCU and Avatar being future contenders. Also I'd argue that Star Wars made more of an impact culturally. But Harry Potter is definitely the most consistent for a consecutive series of films.

Don't think so. I think this seventh movie will beat all before it because of Walker's death. I don't think the cast will really want to make another after that, and if they do, it is guaranteed to drop unless they can reinvent again, but without Walker, it is going to suffer. In Hollywood he may not be top tier, but in this franchise, there are only two superstars and one has now passed. RIP.

Going to address all these points at one go. baumer's right that Vin catapulted the fourth. The third had none of the stars from the first so obviously it was really almost the first true sequel to the first movie. Regarding the fifth and sixth, the Fast series producers must be some of the most savvy out there. The way they basically made the cast a smorgasbord of culture really makes it more appealing to the entire worldwide audience, so the next sequel just keeps acting like a sequel rather than a second sequel.

To me, I only like Fast Five. The first four are watchable but wouldn't care to watch them again. The last one was terrible and if it were not for Walker's passing, I think it would have dropped despite Statham and co. joining.

This seems like the wrong thing to say, but I think they will push the "In memory of Paul Walker" hard in every single ad for Fast 7, I really think it will break the 1B WW barrier easily.

I like how there was 25 people reading this topic at one point. Never seen that many people in one topic that isn't a daily/weekend thread. Good job at creating creative discussion baumer!

I thought we could use a divisive type discussion.  Potter discussions always crazy eventually.  We just need Noctis to show up now.

I still think the stories are ridiculous and I do not nor will I ever understand its popularity.  But, that has nothing to do with the box office prowess this series has displayed.

Like Mark Hamill and Luke.  Daniel will never be able to escape the Potter character the rest of his life.

But unlike Hamill, Radcliffe has plenty of F-U money. It softens the blow of having a ruined acting career when you're sitting on 100 million dollars.

I don't think he's concerned. Or Watson. They're from different generation than Hamill or Fisher. That was the 70s/80s/90s idea of a celebrity, fame, movie star etc. It's changed radically since then. I'm pretty sure Potter kids are content with money they made and ability to film flop indie artsy movies for the rest of their lives without being Kim Kardashian famous.

They have to push it hard because he, along with Vin, is the main artery of the series.

I look forward to the day when my son discovers and binges the Harry Potter movies (which won't be until he's old enough to actually appreciate them) and I tell him about how I was there to witness all the insanity firsthand.

True, but I think Emma Watson will be more commercially and critically successful going forward (not a very bold statement, I know). Daniel was serviceable as Potter but overall I don't find him to be terribly talented.
