Venezuela Box Office Thread

Fucking 20th Century Fox!!! They promised Maze Runner for October 17th and they didnt even said why has been delayed YET AGAIN!!! FUCK YOU FOX!!! (rant over)

Anyway, Ninja Turtles had a very good weekend this time around, dropping just 11% despite the rise of Alexander and the release of the Knights Of The Zodiac movie. Its doing pretty much the same as Dawn at the same time frame, $7 million is still the target.

22 Jump Street premiered way stronger than I expected. To put this in perspective, the first Jump Street made a little over 600K on its entire run in Venezuela. Now the second movie will blow that total when its run is done. Since raunchy comedies usually do very well in this market, I am gonna go with a $3 million total for 22 Jump Street.

Alexander and the Bla bla bla bla actually increased on its second weekend. Its doing very similar numbers to Sex Tape, event though the target for both movies are very different but the time frame is exactly the same on both second weekends. If Alexander keeps up with this kinds of holds we are probably seeing a $4 million total.

And speaking of Sex Tape, the movie increased again. Its truly having Blended like legs, even though its 800k behind at the same time frame. More impressive considering the fact that it had to face 22 Jump Street this weekend. I am so upping the total prediction to $6 million.

Seinto Seiya: Legend of Sanctuary (Probably better known here as Knights of the Zodiac) was released this weekend. Its pretty much like the Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, except that this movie is CGI instead of traditional hand drawn animation, but it comes from Japan so its all good. I had no idea Venezuela had such a solid fanbase for this franchise. But then again, Dragon Ball Z also had a strong opening before dropping like a rock the second weekend, maybe fanboy rush is the reason for that. If DBZ barely made it to $1 million total, there is no reason to believe this one will have better legs, although that is no reason to dismiss the solid fanboy support this movie had on OW.

And finally, The Purge: Anarchy opened to 200k, again late nigth showings only like Lucy. The opening is double in comparasion to the original ($100k) and the total for the first was over 600k, so I guess a $1 million total is a no brainer considering the appeal of the premise of a one night free to commit crimes.

Annabelle did really well this weekend. Not only had the best horror debut in the Venezuelan market yet but in the process it also doubled the OW of the original Conjuring movie ($342K). Whether or not Annabelle surpassess the $3.6 million total of The Conjuring will depend if the movie is more frontloaded or not, though I will not be surprised at all if it ends up doubling the total as well.

Ninja Turtles keeps killing it at the box office this weekend. Its 200k ahead of Dawn right now so in the end it might actually end up getting above $7 million if it keeps getting below 25% drops.

The BoxTrolls opened very decently for a family fare movie. Its very similar to Peabody and Sherman and a little bit below Lego movie and The Nut Job. With normal kiddie movie legs it will get between $3 million or $4 million total depending on the WOM. Lack of competition for animated movies until Book Of Life in november also helps.

Alexander keeps holding remarkably well with yeat another flat weekend. Its 100k ahead of Sex Tape at the same time frame. $4 million total is still the target.

22 Jump Street is still doing better than expected, mainly because 21 Jump Street had a massive 50% drop on the second weekend, so maybe after home video it found a new life thus helping the massive increase of support for the second movie. $3 million is still the target.

Sex Tape is still way behind Blended (1.6 million behind) but that does not take away how awesome this run was so far. $6 million is still the target if it keeps holding like this the following weekends.

Knights Of The Zodiac like Dragon Ball: War of gods had a fanboy rush thus having a massive drop on the second weekend. Although the drop was softer than DB (-55%) so maybe this might get closer to $1 million than I originally thought. It will not get there but its gonna be close.

The Purge: Anarchy had a little bit of a rough drop off this weekend. Maybe Annabelle stole the audience that Purge: Anarchy was targeting. It will still surpass the 600k total of the original but getting to $1 million will be harder now.

Holy shit at Annabelle´s number, I dont know if this was because of the Halloween mood that I felt this weekend but all of the sudden people want to see scary movies. Freaking 34% increase, unbelievable, Conjuring's $3,6 million is so done at this point.

The Maze Runner had a decent OW, though I think it would have been better if the movie was not delayed a hundred freaking times, the october 31st date announcement almost came out of nowhere so maybe this will be more backloaded than your usual YA fare.

Ninja Turtles got its biggest drop yet (but still a decent drop in all fairness), and still ahead of Dawn with $400k. $7 million is still the target.

The Equalizer is another new release this weekend and considering the massive competition that had from Annabelle, Maze Runner and a still strong Ninja Turtles, this 4th place opening is actually very solid. And WOM seems to be good so something between $3 million or $3,5 million is doable.

The Boxtrolls had a steeper drop than most animated films has in this market, maybe Stop Motion style is not as appealing to the GA as the typical CGI fare we usually get. But this is still a decent number and I think it will get close to $3 million due to the lack of animated movies until Book Of Life on November 14th.

Ah cool thanks.

Well Annabelle dropped as much as it increased last weekend it seems. And The Conjuring´s $3.6 million is done already. This movie still has a lot of tank in the gas so anything over $6 million will be amazing.

Hercules also had a pretty good OW thanks to the star power of Dwayne Johnson. WOM will tell if this movie gets anywhere over $3 million witch seems like a reasonable number at this point.

As I expected Maze Runner was greatly backloaded because of the sudden release date and now its getting legs. Just like Hercules, it will depend on the reception of the movie wheater or not Maze Runner can get to $4 million  if the fan base is as rabid as The Hunger Games fanbase (wich by the way, its destroying the presales numbers as we speak).

The Equalizer also had a very good weekend drop, despite so much competition. WOM is very good, Denzel Washington is apparently has a lot of star power here so I can see The Equalizer getting a $3.5 million total.

And finnaly Misuscule, is a french animated movie that was delayed a lot until it finally got a wide release. And just like Nut Job I am very surprised a movie like this got this good of an OW, even with the animation craze in this market and all. Think about it, its just a bunch of ants looking for food and they dont even talk at all. Lets see if the momentum doesnt die off fast like Boxtrolls did, or Book Of Life kills it next weekend.

VENEZUELA 2014

Despite political unrest over the past year, Venezuelans have been “going to movie theaters like never before,” says director Alberto Arvelo. He should know, his The Liberator has made just under $10M this year and is shortlisted for a Foreign Language Academy Award. I’m struck each weekend in doing my international box office reports that Venezuela seems to pop out with grosses that often go up week-to-week, rather than down. Arvelo says moviegoing has been on a steady rise over the past few years, but 2014’s numbers are “unprecedented.” Hollywood movies are up 55% through December 16, according to Rentrak, with three fewer titles released. Fox has four of the Top 10 movies, while Disney boasts the biggest of the year in Maleficent with over $25M. Typically, it’s the fourth biggest market in Latin America for Hollywood titles. But, hang on, all those grosses are actually locked inside the country.

Bolivares are not freely convertible to dollars meaning studio cash sits in bank accounts in Caracas. One exec says, “While we gross a lot, we don’t take much — or any — money out of the country.” Creative attempts to get around the blockage have included doing business with a U.S. company that has a cost-base there, or “you can also have a conference in Caracas and fly a bunch of people there or use your Caracas account for other costs around Latin America and pay from there. But, for the most part, it’s just trapped.” Reinvesting is also certainly an option via local production or building infrastructure so that when things change, the playing field is up to date.

Will that change come in the near future? Execs I’ve spoken with say that’s the idea. “Hopefully you cultivate a culture of moviegoing and when it becomes a thing that you don’t have to recycle inside the market, you have some found money,” a studio exec tells me. Venezuela’s current president is Nicolás Maduro, who took over after the death of Hugo Chávez in 2013. According to The Economist, more than two-thirds of voters think Maduro should not serve out his six-year term. Parliamentary elections are to be held by next December, but they cannot oust Maduro. However, The Economist said last month, they do “offer a chance to break the monopoly of power exercised by his Bolivarian socialists” since Chávez became president in 1999. One exec says the reasoning behind continuing to do business in a volatile market is “You figure, someday that guy’s gonna be out of office.”

In the meantime, I’m told Hollywood tends not to recognize its revenue from Venezuela, but still manages to get something for it. A source says, “Every couple of years the account gets too big so you go to some Venezuelan billionaire living in Miami who pays 30 cents on the dollar.”

It is really unrealistic to quote Venezuelan Box office in terms of USD, the multiple exchange rate system (6.29 ,SICAD 12 or SICAD II 51 or market rate 176) make it impossible to determine how much USD the distributor can get

Well, the English-speaking audience has no idea of what a bolivar is worth so numbers in local currency would make any sense in that sense.

And they explain the situation very well in the article, the Bolivar is a worthless money at that point, people who can there decide to buy real estate in the United States/Miami to keep their wealth steady.

This guy relly needs to get the fuck out of this country before the bloodbath satrs, what happened in febraury 2014 was just the begginning but that is another topic...

I dont have the data because BOM has not updated a long time but I can tell you one thing.. Mockingjay Part I is blowing the shit out the competition, its been seven seven weeks and that movie is still high in the top 5 and in the conversation with a lot of people as well.

Why you may ask? Well its not that diffcult to respond... Hunger Games is the perfect metaphore for whats sadly going on in Venezuela and people has responded strongly to that. In fact back in the riots of febraury some students protesters actually took the mockingjay simbol and painted it with the colors of the Venezuelan flag!

Crazy shit right?

Mmm..Quite interesting to know :D

It was already bad before the decrease in oil prices but now this country enters a dangerous territory. It's quite a miracle people are not revolting yet given how big a disaster that is, here in France that would have happened way sooner ^^" I know many Venezuelans try to leave the country though, their number would be booming in Miami.

I've just found on an online mexican newspaper that Libertador was the most successful local movie in 2014 in Venezuela with 697k admissions and according to BOM that movie did $9.46m in Venezuela. Taking those two numbers in account the average ticket price for that movie was $13.6!!!! Is it possible Boxx93? Is it really that expensive going to the movies there?

Depends on what kind of theatres you go to but yes, generally speaking It is really expensive... In fact every single thing in this country is expensive... even breakfast and a cup of coffee...*trying not to cry*

Anyway, am Glad to see Big Hero 6 doing well here but I am not surprised since venezuelan audiences are incredibly loyal to everything Disney-related (Marvel included)  :)

But if you look at the article further up in this page, you will see that the Dollar worth of the Bolivar is purely theoretical, and it isn't what you get in the real world.
