Venezuela Box Office Thread

Recommended Posts

Clearly summer season has ended, now that kids are back in school this week so maybe that affected the box office this weekend. Also interesting is that the distributor of Ninja Turtles delayed the movie at the last minute until October. I am not gonna watch that movie anyway but man its sucks everytime a movie gets delayed this long  :(

Anyway, Dawn of The Planet Of The Apes holds decently this weekend reaching a total of $3 million. More than the entire lifetime of Rise. Sadly Transformers its keeping the movie to reach its full potential given the slightly higher PTA. Word Of Mouth is good though from the people who saw the movie so that should keep Dawn alive at the top 5 for a little longer. $8 million is still possible.

Transformers 4 is still slaying the competition even though its not at the top spot it was still very close to Dawn this weekend as it reached a total of $9.5 million. Its ahead of X-Men and Guardians at the same point but a little bit behind Rio 2 (a movie with a total of almost $16 million). It should be no problem for Transformers to reach $14 million at least.

Damn, The Nut Job, It littlerally drop nothing at all and its surpassed Peabodys total in 3 weeks. I am so ashamed that this movie is making so much movie. Ninja Turtles would have killed its legs this weekend if not for the delay. Damn you Paramount!!!

Guardinas Of The Galaxy is still holding up very well. So far it made $10.7 million. Very similar to what X Men was making in its sixth weekend. That should be an indication that Guardians will end up at $12.5 million should the drops keep getting this good.

What a big success The Fault In Our Stars turned out to be in this market. Who would have thought that this movie would be much bigger than Divergent. At $6.7 million so far it should end at $7.5 million. Man, I cannot wait to see how Mockingjay P1 will perform here  B)

I am not going to analyze the rest of the Top 5 except the openers and La Distancia Mas Larga because the rest its boring stuff.

La Distancia Mas Larga keeps holding like a rock. And still no nationwide expansion, what a bummer because that movie deserves it.

Neighbors had a very limited amount of screens and showtimes this weekend and looking at the PTA I would say it did pretty decent. Not spectacular but decent. Though I dont think it will have legs considering the Blu Ray got leaked. And its a shame because the movie is pretty awesome. $800k or $1 million.

Trascendance however did pretty bad. Like everywhere else of course. WOM will kill it, so the total will be under $1 million.

Already 10 movies did more than $10m this year and Trans4mers will cross that mark before next Sunday!! Well done Venezuela!!!!

I seriously don't see how TA 2 (or any 2015 movie for that matter) will beat Maleficent. Is the Venezuela market expanding at such a rapid pace to make a 100% increase possible, since no other Marvel movie even passed TA since 2012?

Iron Man 3 could have easily surpassed the Avengers in dollars if the currency exchange had stayed the same in 2013. So unless a big devaluation happens (and I really hope it does not happen for the ecomony´s sake and record´s sake) TA 2 is in fine shape to beat Maleficent next year because like I said a few days, Marvel is a really hot brand in Venezuela.

Movies opening this weekend (september 19-21):

SEX TAPE:

Posted Image

Given the decent performance of The Other Woman in this market and the strong marketing campaing this movie has been getting so far I would say Sex Tape is poised to do solid numbers over the weekend

DOLPHIN TALE 2:

Posted Image

The first Dolphin Tale movie was not very succesful ($746,701) although it did not had much marketing or enough screens to play the movie at the time. Apparenty people started to discovered the movie on Blu Ray and popularity rose, now the second movie has a much better marketing and more screens so much like Expendables 3 I expect Dolphin Tale 2 to greatly surpass the first one and perform with better legs

LUCY:

Fucking shit, I am really getting pissed at UIP (Paramount/Universal distributor) right now, they fucked up Neighbors, Ninja Turtles and now this. Scarlett Johanson (very popular actress here) in a leading role where she kicks ass and uses the full capacity of her brain is a really actractive concept to the audience, but just like Neighbors, Lucy is only available in a limited number of theatres in night showings. I said I am pissed because a movie like this in a nationwide release with daytime and nighttime showing not only can be a really succesful movie, but a very leggy one as well. Fuck you UIP get your shit togheter. ***rant over***

What would they do in Venezuela given they didn't do it elsewhere? That doesn't make any sense!

Transformers 4 took back the number one spot this weekend making $10.8 million. Its a little bit behind Rio 2 at the same time frame but with holds like these I think Transformers 4 will catch up. $14 million is still the target.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes is still holding decently but its nowhere near the numbers of other big blockbuster movies this year. The strong competition from Transformers 4 and the lack of dubbed versions along with kids going back to school is preventing Apes from making the money it would have had it been released in the summer season. But its really not a bad result when all is said and done. $7 million should be the target.

Sex Tape did really well this weekend. The Jason Segel-Cameron Diaz comedy turned out to be appealing enough to work as a counter programming movie against the two leading blockbusters. If legs are good enough Sex Tape is in good shape to make $3 million.

The Nut Job is still unexplicably pulling Blended-like legs. If it keeps going like that it will surpass Planes: Fire And Recue ($4,045,657). How embarrassing.

And wow, even with limited screens Lucy still somehow managed to get to the Top 5 this weekend. Goes to show the star power that Scarlet Johansson has around the world. Oddly enough Lucy opened in nine theatres less than Blended on its first weekend ($298,999) and still managed to make a monster load of money ($7,639,317). Of course Lucy will not pull Blended-like legs but hey, I never though The Nut Job would hold as much as it did so anything is possible!

I forgot that a new local movie was coming this weekend El Psiquiatra witch is a Drama about a crime where the principal suspect is a psichiatrist. The opening is slightly higher than La Distancia Mas Larga ($229,114) but I never read the reviews for the movie so I dont know how will be its legs.

Dolphin Tale 2 almost doubled the opening weekend of the first one ($80,662) but its a very under the radar type of result and the legs of the first movie wehre greatly helped because of Christmas Season so I doubt if Dolphin Tale 2 will increase the way Expendables 3 did compared to the second one. $1 million should be enough to call it a mild success.

Wow, it looks like Sex Tape is going to pull a Blended-run. In Venezuela, all movies that increases on their second weekends (No matter how big they open) usually has a very leggy run. Just look at Maleficent. And beign a raunchy comedy and the fact that the Jennifer Lawrence/Celebgate scandal is still a big thing in Venezuelan Twitter also helps. Sex Tape is clearly going to blow past $3 million.

Transformers 4 had another decent post-summer weekend decline, blowing past the $11 million mark. Ninja Turtles will come this friday (for sure!) so that might hurt its chances to pass $14 million considering that its another Michael Bay movie (I know he is the producer but you know what I mean)

Into The Storm had a strong opening considering it had the highest PTA. Its a very similar opening to Noah, another disaster movie so if it follows the same pattern its going to end at $3 million at least.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes is still holding nicely against competittion, so there is hope it can hold against the new releases in october. $7 million is still the target.

Lucy holds very nicely considering the fact it lost 9 screens, the good news is that the PTA increased from $8,588 to $10,335. Those are very encouraging results so Lucy might pass $3 million with the same low number of screens (assuming it does not get an expansion any time sooner)

Dolphin Tale 2 had a strong hold so there is hope that might get really leggy like the first one even without Christmas to help, unless Ninja Turtles takes away a lot of the family audience. $1 million is still the target.

As above/So Below had an underwhelming opening below the top 10. That can be atributted to the lack of marketing campaign and a very low number of screens, witch is a shame because horror movies are very popular here (The Conjuring, Deliver Us From Evil) Its only hope is WOM now. I will not be surprised if this ends below the $1 million mark.

And finally the argentinian hit Wild Tales had a limited release of 11 screens, the opening looks poor but the PTA its quite decent when you look at the rest of the PTA in the top 20. I dont know how this will perform but if the buzz I am hearing aboout this movie is any indication, I think it will have a respectable run.

Before I start I just want to say thank god BOM is back on track... and let’s hope it stays that way.

Anyway, in a market with very little family movies Ninja Turtles proved to be a very strong competition for Venezuelan box office this weekend, opening over $1 millon dollars which is impressive considering we are out of the summer season. With no family movies until BoxTrolls comes out Ninja Turtles will get to $9 million, possibly $10 million if WOM is good enough.

Into The Storm holds up impressively with over $1 million already grossed in 10 days. Although Noah had a theater expansion and this one had a decrease in screens, Into The Storm will have no problem getting past to $3 million considering the strong appeal of disaster movies in this market (The Day After Tomorrow and 2012 did very well here)

Sex Tape drop a little harder than expected this weekend but it’s still slightly ahead of Blended at the same time frame, although is unlikely now it will develop legs like Blended with upcoming competition like 22 Jump Street and Maze Runner this Friday. $4 million is the target now.

Transformers 4 got affected by the opening of Ninja Turtles this weekend as reflected in its 44% drop, so that kills its chances of reaching $14 million total, nevertheless whatever total it gets it was still an amazing run.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes got really hit by Ninja Turtles as well so it is more likely to end with a $6 million total run rather than $7 million. Shit, Fox should have released Dawn in summer instead of September, it would have benefited from the season.

Lucy is still holding extremly well this weekend, and the PTA average is still increasing. The holds are very similar to Escape Plan and that ended with $2,5 million. That will be the traget for Lucy now.

Liz En Septiembre is another local movie about a subject that sadly is still a taboo in this country: Lesbians. But Patricia Velazquez stars in it and that gives both credibility and curiosity to people still reluctant to see the movie for its subject matter. The OW is lower than the one that La Distancia Mas Larga had but the PTA average is higher than the previous one, and WOM is apperantly good so there is still hope for Liz.

If I Stay, what a failure that movie turned out here, not only was unable to replicate the success of Fault In Our Stars but it also failed to have a decent PTA average considering the small amount of screens the movie was given. Only WOM can save If I Stay now, $1 million is the target now.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had a nice 22% hold this weekend, wich shows that the movie is clearly the top choice for the families. though in comparasion with Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, Ninja Turtles is 300k behind in the same time frame, witch is not precisely the kind of holdings that leads you to the $10 million mark. Plus Boxtrolls is coming in the end of October so the competition will get stiffer down the road. Ninja Turtles should finish in the $7 million mark.

Alexander (Not going to say the damn full name!) Had a very good opening weekend. Very similar to the OW of Peabody and Sherman ($447,883). This probably explains why Ninja Turtles got a little hit this weekend, it took a chunk of the family audience. Although it is unlikely that Alexander will have the same legs that Peabody had because of competition with the Boxtrolls so Alexander should finish at $2 million.

Into The Storm had another excellent hold this weekend. Though is still way behind Noah at the same time frame ($2.4 million). There is still hope that Storm will get the $3 million mark if these holds continues, but the upcoming competition will make that a little difficult.

Sex Tape had a fantastic drop this weekend, just 7%. But the harsh drop from the last weekend put it behind Blended at the same time frame ($2.9 million) Maze Runner and 22 Jump Street will hit it hard this weekend so $4 million will be difficult but not impossible.

And rounding up the top 5 we have the local hit Liz en Septiembre, a movie that despite its controversial subject it managed to increase 4.5% and jump 3 spots. Its 200k behind La Distancia Mas Larga and El Psiquiatra but I have a feeling that it will eventually catch up the total of these two because of the buzz the movie has been getting lately.

If I Stay actually had a very good hold despite its horrible opening weekend but still it does not make up for the fact that this was advertised as the next Fault In Our Stars kind of movie and it totally failed to reach even a quarter of what Stars did in OW. $1 million is still the target.
