Venezuela Box Office Thread

Recommended Posts

Well, like I promised I opened a thread about the box office of my country. I will strat with the yearly results, some short analysis about the nature of the market here..

I dont have the numbers of admissions because that is really hard information to find so I only have Box Office Mojo as my source of information about the box office of my country. There is available data since 2008 so I will start with that year until present.

Every Wednesday or Thursday I will give updates about weekend box office and movies coming out the following weekend along with my predictions. Please feel free to add information if I miss anything.

Well as you can see up until 2012 the highest grossing films of each year where animated films, either from Disney, DreamWorks or Blue Sky. That is because other than Marvel superhero movies, the animated family films are the hot ticket here, almost garanteed box office hits. Here we have no "animation is just for kids" complex like other countries have. If its good everybody will go and see it.

On 2013 that streak was going to continue until a local movie called Papita Mani Tostón came out on December 20th,  2013. This movie is a comedy about a couple who are fans of different baseball local teams, but these local teams are the eternal rivals (Lions of Caracas vs Sailors of Magallanes) and the boyfriend has to pretend in front the girlfriends family that he is a Magillian fan because her dad is non other than the manager of the Magillians team. It was a pretty big deal because baseball is the national sport here and Lion and Magillians truly are rival teams (I am a Lions fan myself :) ) and the movie was really really good. Its the first time that a local movie truly reflected the humorous venezuelan nature on screen so it became a huge success.

The Venezuelan market is a very leggy one and competition is not really a problem but its in fact the opposite. The more movies are in theatres the better all movies will perform in general because we like variety, If nothing new is released in 2 or 3 weeks we just stop going and all movies perform bad no matter how good they are.

Some of you make ask yourselves how come a country with such a bad economy can have a very healthy movie bussiness. Well the awnser its this: We are awere that this is a shitty country  with a really bad economy, the social problems are even worse, insecurity is insane and dont even get me started about the politians here. The news at the TV and the papers are always depressing and its difficult to find pretty much any product anywhere because of lack of production. But like any other normal person we dont like to be depressed all time so we go to the movies to forget about these problems for at least two hours in a dark room. After all that is waht movie are made for, to escape from life just for a moment. But this is not a poor country (we produce and export petrolium) and people are not stupid, we will get out of this crisis and this corrupt goverment when the time comes.

But we love movies no matter how good or bad things are and we will keep going because we deeply enjoy it.

Well, Tomorrow or sooner I will post the weekend numbers as soon as BOM has the data available.

Well as expected, How To Train Your Dragon 2 was heavily benefited by Children´s Day and Summer Vacations, plus it earned an additional $264.738 for a Total of $1,910,726 from the Sunday Preview of June 13th, witch is impressive given that it was the same day that the Final World Cup Game was broadcasted on national television.

To put things in perspective, the first How to Train Your Dragon had an opening weekend of $230,390 (it increased to $271,301 in its second weekend) for a total gross of $1,719,199. This means that Dragon 2 already surpassed the opening weeknd of Dragon 1 in ONE day at the same time as the World Cup Final and it already surpassed the total gross of Dragon 1 in four days including the previews. That is a monster success. Of course  the good will of the first one and the Dragons of Berk show also helped but this is something really amazing to behold. If it follows the same trajectory of X-Men, Dragon 2 should blow past $10 million in Venezuela.

Maleficent continues to show really strong legs on the Venezuelan market as the Angelina Jolie tentpole earns another $934,500 for a total gross of $19,741,980 after eight weeks in theatres. the crazy thing is that it did not decreased, IT INCREASED. This can be highly attributed to Children´s day given that Maleficent is a very popular movie with children, even more so than Frozen (But the success of Maleficent is partly because of Frozen so there is that) and there was probably a spillover effect from the high opening of Dragon 2 that made Maleficent as the second choice for families. Planes 2 is coming up next weekend but it is unlikely that it will cut Maleficent legs. a total of $23-25 million should come as no surprise.

X-Men: Days of Future Past continues its strong run on its fifth weekend decreasing just a mere 7% with $633,569 for a total of $9,661,545. after the harsh drop from last weekend X-Men recovers this weekend with the end of the World Cup that was keeping aways its main audience: Teenagers and young adults. With Summer Vacations ahead and no direct competition until Guardians of The Galaxy hits Venezuela on August 8th, Days of Future Past should have no problem reaching at least a final number of just shy under $12 million.

Blended was the most benefited from this weekend increasing 41,2% with $524,727 for a total of $1,890,830. Theatre owners should realize by now that giving Blended so little number of screens was an incredibly stupid idea. Adam Sandler movies (and raunchy american comedies in general) always does solid bussiness at the Venezuelan Box Office, he is a pretty big comedy star here. It is only logic that a movie with such a demand would have the highest increase from the top 5. I hope they increase the number of screens a little more because there is potential for big numbers here.

Yes, Maleficent is a big surprise here but Rio 2 does not stays behind. This week with Childrens Day it increased 29,4% with $138,567 for a total of $15,363,085.  Even after 3 months Rio 2 continues to exceed expectations by staying at the top 5 for 12 weekends in a row. Maybe the brazilian flavor in the middle of the World Cup fever along with the strong good will from the first one (witch was also a pretty big event here) helped the movie to stay as long  as it could. And probably the spillover effect from both Dragon 2 and Maleficent helped a bit with its increase. Its final total should be $16-17 million.

I know it's a long way to go but I just realise that TF4 is opening in Venezuela as it's last OS market on 22nd of August.

So if the unthinkable happened and TF4 had trouble reaching a billion, this market would be my last hope.

No pressure.
