The purpose of this list is to create a breakdown of the top 200 domestic grossing movies (adjusted for inflation) by studio. I grouped the movies by the big studio that was involved in making the movie. If a smaller studio only used a big studio as a distributor and financed a movie by itself, then I grouped those movies under the smaller studio.

Box Office Mojo has a top 200 list, but they don't have some older movies added to their list that should be there. Therefore, I am going to add the older movies to Box Office Mojo's list to create an accurate list of the top 200 domestic grossing films adjusted for inflation.

All movies made by a smaller movie studio before a larger studio purchased them are grouped under that studio.

All New Line Cinema movies on the list are grouped under Warner Bros. because WB owned New Line while all of the New Line movies on this list were being made.

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope is grouped under Fox because Fox was the big studio involved with financing Star Wars. The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and Star Wars Episodes I, II and III are grouped under Lucasfilm because Lucasfilm only used Fox as a distributor for them. The Star Wars films that were made after Disney bought Lucasfilm are grouped under Disney.

Titanic is listed under Fox because Fox was the big studio that financed the movie. Fox initiated making the movie and financed the majority of the movie. Fox was making Titanic when Paramount agreed to co-finance some of it. While Paramount did co-finance some of the movie, Fox was the studio that financed most of the movie. Paramount was the U.S. distributor, but Fox was the studio that set the release date.

Marvel has Iron Man listed under them because it was made before Disney purchased Marvel. Paramount was only being used as a distributor.

The first 4 Indiana Jones movies are grouped under Paramount because Paramount was involved in financing them. Any Indiana Jones movies made after Disney purchased Lucasfilm will be grouped under Disney.

Carolco only used Tri-Star to distribute their 2 blockbusters on the list: Rambo: First Blood Part II and Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

Saving Private Ryan is listed under Paramount because Paramount was the big studio involved in financing the movie. Paramount developed the movie. When Steven Spielberg signed on to direct the film, Paramount allowed his company, Dreamworks, to share in the producing credit. The only reason that Paramount was not the domestic distributor is because they flipped a coin with Dreamworks to see which company would handle domestic distribution, which Dreamworks won. Paramount was the international distributor. Years later, Paramount bought Dreamworks.

DreamWorks Animation only used Paramount as a distributor for Shrek the Third. When Paramount purchased DreamWorks, DreamWorks Animation became its own separate company and was not owned by Paramount. DreamWorks Animation was eventually purchased by Universal.

Crocodile Dundee is listed under Rimfire Films LTD because Paul Hogan financed and owned the film himself through his company, Rimfire Films LTD. Paramount was only used as the U.S. distributor.

The Sixth Sense is listed under Spyglass Entertainment because they financed the movie on their own. Disney sold the production rights to Spyglass. Spyglass only used Disney as a distributor.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is listed under The Saul Zaentz Company because Saul Zaentz financed the film himself through his own company, The Saul Zaentz Company. The movie was an independent production. United Artists was only used as a distributor.

In order for me to make this list easier to understand, let me list the 12 films that Box office Mojo doesn't have data for. These are the 12 films that are being added to Box Office Mojo's top 200 list to create an accurate list of the top 200 domestic grossing films (adjusted for inflation).

This is the Army (WB) 1943 -                           (46,864,888 estimated tickets)

Song of the South (Dis) 1946 -                        (44,432,859 estimated tickets)

Samson and Delilah (Paramount) 1949 -           (50,139,502 estimated tickets)

Quo Vadis (MGM) 1951  -                                (47,589,917 estimated tickets)

From Here to Eternity (Sony) 1953 -                 (46,956,940 estimated tickets)

White Christmas (Paramount) 1954 -                (52,494,781 estimated tickets)

Giant (WB) 1956 -                                           (47,058,601 estimated tickets)

South Pacific (Fox) 1958 -                                (50,921,234 estimated tickets)

The Longest Day (Fox) 1962 -                          (44,532,503 estimated tickets)

How the West Was Won (MGM) 1963 -              (51,969,514 estimated tickets)

Tom Jones (UA) 1963 -                                    (42,442,586 estimated tickets)

Fiddler on the Roof (UA) 1971 -                         (44,697,391 estimated tickets)

For the Disney ones, you have to take into account that some (Snow White, 101 Dalmatians, Aladdin, Lion King, etc,) were rereleased several times.

You can say that about every movie being released before the mid eighties and´the advent of the vhs.

I always include re-releases. A movie can continue to be re-released and add to its box office numbers. That's the beauty of following the box office. The box office is fluid. Movies are timeless classics and their box office runs can continue as long as people are willing to pay to see the movies in the movie theater.

Interesting list. One correction: It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World was United Artists, not MGM.Also, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse actually predates the merger that formed MGM, it was just Metro Pictures. Not sure whether you'd still consider it MGM...

Thank you for the information on It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.

I consider The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse to be MGM because it was made by Marcus Loew's Metro Pictures. Eventually, Marcus Loew would merge Metro Pictures with Goldwyn Pictures, and later on with Louie B Mayer Productions to form MGM. So The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse is really made by the company that became MGM, so it's essentially MGM.

Nice work!

Seeing Redford and Newman break the top 200 with two different studios again makes me sad they didn't make more movies together.   I think that will always bother me.

I also count re-releases.   If the public is willing to pay to see it....that's exactly what box office is supposed to show us.   If Ghostbusters would have made 50 million this past weekend, that's a huge compliment to the movie and certainly should count.   There are some movies which managed to retain their appeal over several generations...that's an awesome achievement.

The list has been updated to reflect the addition of Guardians of the Galaxy.

Stir Crazy has been removed from the list.

*STIR CRAZY* was one of the 200 highest grossing movies of all time adjusted for inflation (I mean, was until a little while ago)?  I actually kinda liked it when it came out, but I'm a little appalled.

Here is some analysis about the list as it currently stands. This is only a glimpse and will change over time as new blockbusters make their way onto the list.

Right now, Disney, Warner Bros., and Paramount combine for 103 movies on the list. That's an amazing total. Those 3 studios make up more than half of the most successful blockbusters of all-time.

There is always a lot of talk about newer movies having a tougher time competing with older movies. However, looking at this list, that argument doesn't hold true. Here is a breakdown of the movies on this list by decade:

1920's/1930's - 3

1940's -11

1950's- 19

1960's- 23

1970's- 27

1980's- 25

1990's- 32

2000's- 42

2010's- 18

It seems pretty clear from the above data that modern blockbusters are having no problem competing against older blockbusters.

I'm not sure about that. Sone of the ones on BO.com adjust lower (Star Wars, Doctor Zhivago, The Exorcist), but some of them adjust higher (Gone With the Wind is $1.9 billion).

When working with movies that had re-releases prior to 1982, I feel like the lower adjustment should be used...

Mojo's list is accurate. I will be using Mojo's list with the older movies from Box Office.com added in.

The difference between Box Office Mojo's list and BoxOffice.com's list is that Box office Mojo was able to obtain admissions numbers for some of the movies. Therefore, they use those admissions numbers in their calculations.

I discovered this by looking at Around the World in 80 Days. Box Office Mojo does not list the re-releases. However, when you run the numbers using their adjuster, it becomes clear that they do calculate for them because Mojo lists a lower gross than the movie would have earned if the whole box office total was attributed to its original release year. This experiment was followed with 101 Dalmatians, where Mojo's listed numbers give a similar gross to what Box Office.com has listed as the adjusted gross. However, Mojo has a higher adjusted gross listed. And the reason for this, as Mojo states, is because they were able to get the actual admissions numbers for some of the movies.
