Top 200 Domestic Grossing Movies of all-time (Adjusted for Inflation)

I never knew that only 285 movies sold more tickets than The Flintstones

Their list isn't accurate. There are a lot of older movies that sold more tickets, but they don't have those movies added to their list. Box Office.com used to have a list that added the older movies, but BOM adjusted for inflation better. So I just created a top 200 list by adding the movies BOM didn't have to BOM's list. Then, Box Office.com got rid of their list. So I can't tell you how many additional movies sold more tickets than the Flintstones, but this list has an additional 15, and there are more that exist.

The year 2017 is coming to an end, and there have been some new additions to this list. 3 movies have made their way onto this list, with a 4th movie on its way before the year ends. Already making the list are Beauty and the Beast (2017), Wonder Woman, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is on its way to joining them.

The first piece of news was the re-release of Terminator 2: Judgment Day. One of 2 Carolco movies on this list, the film is now owned by Studio Canal. Studio Canal is re-released Terminator 2 domestically, and it added very little to its total. Therefore, its place on the list didn't change due to its re-release. It did movie down 1 slot because the live action Beauty and the Beast (2017) passed it, and it will move down another slot when Star Wars: The Last Jedi passes it.

The big news for Warner Bros. is that they added Wonder Woman to the list. Wonder Woman is a massively successful blockbuster, and it is Warner Bros. first film to make the list since American Sniper in 2014. This gives Warner Bros. 31 films in the top 200 at the end of the year.

For Disney, it was business as usual. Since not having a film make this list in 2011, Disney has put at least one film on the list every subsequent year. This year, Disney will put 3 films on the list. It is very rare for the same studio to have 3 films in the top 200 from the same year. Disney added a live action version of Beauty and the Beast, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and will add Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Disney is dominating this decade. Currently, Disney has 45 films on the list, and when Star Wars: The Last Jedi knocks Zootopia off the list, they will still have 45 films on the list. 16 of those movies are from this decade, and Disney is showing no signs of slowing down.

Next year will be an interesting year. Disney is poised to add even move films to the list. Universal, which had an extremely successful 2015 and also put a film on the list in 2016, may try to challenge Disney in 2018. Warner Bros. could also put more films on the list. Paramount needs to attempt to re-create its previous magic or it may no longer have the third most movies on the list. For Fox, what could be its last independent year.

Some major news this year is Disney's plan to buy Fox. Until the deal is finalized (assuming it ever becomes finalized), any Fox movie that makes the list will be listed under Fox. Once the deal is finalized, any movie after that that makes the list will be listed under Disney. Currently, Fox has 21 movies in the top 200. That is impressive and ties them with Universal for 4th most movies on the list.

As ticket price inflation increases, it becomes tougher and tougher for a film to make this list. There is no way to predict if next year will add as many movies to the list as this year did. However, 2018 should be another exciting year for blockbusters at the box office, and some may even gross enough domestically to make this list.

Not sure if anyone noticed this but some certain movies from 2010, have suddenly changed ranks in the adjusted DOM-list:

"Inception" is now at #203 being above films like Hobbit: AUJ & Skyfall with $348M.

"Twilight: Eclipse" is at #194 of all time with $357M, being 2 ranks above "Twilight: New Moon" which is at #196 with a similar $3.

"Toy Story 3" is at #96, with $489M beating both Aladdin & Mrs. Doubtfire.

Numerous superhero movies are on this list. The dominant theory has been that Disney/Marvel has been the dominant force in superhero movies. Indeed, they have been quite successful, but until this year, it was another studio that truly ruled over this list in the superhero genre. Lets take a look at the superhero movies on this list at the end of 2017.

1. The Avengers (Disney)

2. The Dark Knight (WB)

3. Spider-Man (Sony)

4. Batman (WB)

5. Spider-Man 2 (Sony)

6. The Dark Knight Rises (WB)

7. Superman (WB)

8. Avengers: Age of Ultron (Disney)

9. Spider-Man 3 (Sony)

10. Iron Man 3 (Disney)

11. Captain America: Civil War (Disney)

12. Wonder Woman (WB)

13. Iron Man (Marvel)

14. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (Disney)

15. Batman Forever (WB)

16. Deadpool (Fox)

17. Guardians of the Galaxy (Disney)

As you can see, from the 17 movies on the list, 6 belonged to Warner Bros. and 6 belonged to Disney. Disney had the number one ranked movie, but Warner Bros. had numbers 2, 4, 6, and 7 before Disney's next superhero movie. WB's 5th superhero movie was higher than Disney's 5th. And WBs 6th ranked superhero movie was higher than Disney's 6th. Despite the reputation of the MCU, it was actually WB that really had the most successful superhero films overall. Disney/Marvel only had the number one ranked film.

Now lets take a look at the rankings right now (note: the rankings could slightly change in the next few weeks depending on how well Avengers: Infinity War continues to do.

1. The Avengers (Disney)

2. Black Panther (Disney)

3. The Dark Knight (WB)

4. Spider-Man (Sony)

5. Avengers: Infinity War (Disney)

6. Batman (WB)

7. Spider-Man 2 (Sony)

8. The Dark Knight Rises (WB)

9. Superman (WB)

10. Avengers: Age of Ultron (Disney)

11. Spider-Man 3 (Sony)

12. Iron Man 3 (Disney)

13. Captain America: Civil War (Disney)

14. Wonder Woman (WB)

15. Iron Man (Marvel)

16. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (Disney)

17. Batman Forever (WB)

18. Deadpool (Fox)

19. Guardians of the Galaxy (Disney)

At this time, Disney/Marvel has 8 superhero movies on the list. WB has 6, Sony has 3, Fox has 1, and Marvel (when it was an independent studio) has 1 movie (Iron Man). Disney/Marvel's dominant reputation now matches the results of this list. Disney has movie numbers 1, 2, 5, 10, 12, 13, 16, and 19. It is truly impressive that Disney/Marvel superhero films continue to reach the heights that they do.

If Disney's deal to purchase Fox is completed, Fox will no longer be independent. Therefore, their movies will be listed under Disney. That means that Deadpool could very well be the last independent Fox movie to make it onto this list. Currently, Fox has 20 movies on the list. That's more movies on the list than MGM (9), UA (8), and RKO (1) combined. The oldest Fox movie in the top 200 is The Robe from 1953. The highest Fox movie on the list is Star Wars at number 2. That is followed by The Sound of Music at number 3. That is followed by Titanic at number 5. Fox has clearly made some of the most popular movies of all-time.

The year 2018 is almost over and this has been quite the year at the box office. 4 movies from 2018 have made the list. That's a big event in and of itself, having 4 movies from the same year reach the top 200 all-time. However, it isn't unprecedented. What is more amazing is that 3 of those movies all came from the same studio: Disney. But, the most impressive thing is that all 3 of those Disney movies reached the top 50.

Walt Disney Studios has the top 3 domestic films this year at the box office and all 3 made this list. Black Panther is number 30, Avengers: Infinity War is number 35, and Incredibles 2 is number 47. Disney dominates the top 200. When you go through the top 200, 48 of the movies on the list are from Disney. However, even by Disney's dominant standards, 3 movies in the top 50 from the same year is phenomenal. Disney continues to make all-time successful blockbusters at a record pace.

The other movie to make the top 200 list is Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom from Universal. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom ranks number 138 on the top 200 list. It's the 4th Jurassic Park film that Universal has put on the list. It's another strong performance by a Universal film, as Universal continues to try to over-take Paramount as the 3rd most successful studio on this list.

Titanic should probably be under Fox, or both Paramount and Fox. Fox initiated the project and Paramount joined in later to share some of the cost, although they were caped on the investment. Fox was standing to lose much more when it went way over-budget.

I read your thinking for sorting them

The purpose of this list is to create a breakdown of the top 200 domestic grossing movies (adjusted for inflation) by studio. I grouped the movies by the big studio that was involved in making the movie. If a smaller studio only used a big studio as a distributor and financed a movie by itself, then I grouped those movies under the smaller studio.

but Paramount clearly didn't finance Titanic by itself

After doing extensive research, you are right. Fox is the studio that initiated the movie and financed the majority of the movie. Despite Paramount getting domestic distribution rights, Fox was the studio that was setting the release date. Titanic is clearly Fox’s movie. I am going to list Titanic under Fox.
