66. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (2011) 19 points- 6 votes

"Words are, in my not-so-humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic. Capable of both inflicting injury, and remedying it."

momentsdh2.JPG

Harry, Ron, and Hermione continue their quest of finding and destroying the Dark Lord's three remaining Horcruxes, the magical items responsible for his immortality. But as the mystical Deathly Hallows are uncovered, and Voldemort finds out about their mission, the biggest battle begins and life as they know it will never be the same again.

Trivia: The fight scene between Maggie Smith and Alan Rickman was filmed when Smith was 76 years old, which makes her the oldest actress to have a fight scene in a movie.

Ruk's Comments

"Has it really already been 3 years since this film was released? The final film in the Harry Potter franchise, a franchise that (like Baumer recently commented) is likely to be unique in the annals of history. And what a finale it was. Emotional, action-packed, it truly felt like the end of an era.

I still prefer PoA though."

65. A Clockwork Orange (1971) 19 points- 8 votes

"It's funny how the colors of the real world only seem really real when you viddy them on the screen."

clockwork_orange.jpg

Protagonist Alex DeLarge is an "ultraviolent" youth in futuristic Britain. As with all luck, his eventually runs out and he's arrested and convicted of murder and rape. While in prison, Alex learns of an experimental program in which convicts are programed to detest violence. If he goes through the program, his sentence will be reduced and he will be back on the streets sooner than expected. But Alex's ordeals are far from over once he hits the mean streets of Britain that he had a hand in creating.

Trivia: Alex performing "Singing in the Rain" as he attacks the writer and his wife was not scripted. Stanley Kubrick spent four days experimenting with this scene, finding it too conventional. Eventually he approached Malcolm McDowell and asked him if he could dance. They tried the scene again, this time with McDowell dancing and singing the only song he could remember. Kubrick was so amused that he swiftly bought the rights to "Singing in the Rain" for $10,000.

"Still not seen this one yet. Maybe I just love Singin' in the Rain too much (speaking of, I'm pissed it didn't make it onto this list)."

64. Taxi Driver (1976) 19 points- 11 votes

"You talkin' to me? You talkin' to me? You talkin' to me? Then who the hell else are you talking... you talking to me? Well I'm the only one here. Who the fuck do you think you're talking to? Oh yeah? OK."

Taxi_Driver_poster.JPG

Travis Bickle is an ex-Marine and Vietnam War veteran living in New York City. As he suffers from insomnia, he spends his time working as a taxi driver at night, watching porn movies at seedy cinemas during the day, or thinking about how the world, New York in particular, has deteriorated into a cesspool. He's a loner who has strong opinions about what is right and wrong with mankind. For him, the one bright spot in New York humanity is Betsy, a worker on the presidential nomination campaign of Senator Charles Palantine. He becomes obsessed with her. After an incident with her, he believes he has to do whatever he needs to make the world a better place in his opinion. One of his priorities is to be the savior for Iris, a twelve-year-old runaway and prostitute who he believes wants out of the profession and under the thumb of her pimp and lover Matthew.

Trivia: Paul Schrader wrote the script for "Taxi Driver" in five days. As he was writing, he kept a loaded gun on his desk for motivation and inspiration.

Ruk's Comments

"A fascinating character study of a disturbed mind, this is a gem in the careers of both Martin Scorcese and Robert DeNiro. I don't think anyone can argue the inclusion of this film on the list."

63. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) 20 points- 10 votes

"Why do I fall in love with every woman I see who shows me the least bit of attention?"

eternal_sunshine_of_the_spotless_mind_ve

Joel is stunned to discover that his girlfriend Clementine has had her memories of their tumultuous relationship erased. Out of desperation, he contracts the inventor of the process, Dr. Howard Mierzwaik, to have Clementine removed from his own memory. But as Joel's memories progressively disappear, he begins to rediscover their earlier passion. From deep within the recesses of his brain, Joel attempts to escape the procedure. As Dr. Mierzwiak and his crew chase him through the maze of his memories, it's clear that Joel just can't get her out of his head.

Trivia: The scene where Joel and Clementine watch the circus go through the streets was made up on the spot, as the film crew and cast happened to be working nearby and Michel Gondry decided it could work well in the film. The part where Clementine disappears suddenly is one of Gondry's favorite moments of the film, as Jim Carrey didn't know Kate Winslet was going to disappear and Gondry likes it because Carrey's face appears so saddened. When the sound blanks out in the final film, Carrey is actually saying "Kate?"

62. Up (2009) 20 points- 11 votes

"I was hiding under your porch because I love you."

up_2009_265_poster.jpg

A young Carl Fredrickson meets a young adventure-spirited girl named Ellie. They both dream of going to a lost land in South America. 70 years later, Ellie has died. Carl remembers the promise he made to her. Then, when he inadvertently hits a construction worker, he is forced to go to a retirement home. But before they can take him, he and his house fly away. However, he has a stowaway aboard: an 8-year-old boy named Russell, who's trying to get an Assisting the Elderly badge. Together, they embark on an adventure, where they encounter talking dogs, an evil villain and a rare bird named Kevin.

Trivia: In June 2009, 10-year-old Colby Curtin from Huntington Beach, California, was suffering from the final stages of terminal vascular cancer. Her dying wish was to live long enough to see Up (2009). Unfortunately, Colby was too sick to leave home and her family feared she would die without seeing the film. A family friend contacted Pixar, and a private screening was arranged for Colby. The company flew an employee with a DVD copy of "Up", along with some tie-in merchandise from the film. Colby couldn't see the screen because the pain kept her eyes closed, so her mother gave her a play-by-play of the film. Seven hours after viewing the film, Colby passed away.

61. Spiderman 2 (2004) 20 points- 12 votes

"Whoa... He just stole that guy's pizza!"

spiderman2c.jpg

Peter Parker is an unhappy man: after two years of fighting crime as Spider-Man, his life has begun to fall apart. The girl he loves is engaged to someone else, his grades are slipping, he cannot keep any of his jobs, and on top of it, the newspaper Daily Bugle is attacking him viciously, claiming that Spider-Man is a criminal. He reaches the breaking point and gives up the crime fighter's life, once and for all. But after a failed fusion experiment, eccentric and obsessive scientist Dr. Otto Octavius is transformed into super villain Doctor Octopus, Doc Ock for short, having four long tentacles as extra hands. Peter guesses it might just be time for Spider-Man to return, but would he act upon it?

Trivia: Alfred Molina who plays Dr. Octopus, actually gave names to his four mechanical tentacles (Larry, Harry, Flo, and Moe). Flo was the top right tentacle, because it was operated by a female grip and that particular tentacle was the most motherly, which removed his sunglasses and gave him sips of his drink.

Ruk's Comments

"Admittedly not the Raimi sequel I would've preferred to see on this list (still pissed Evil Dead 2 didn't make it), Spiderman's second outing still has a lot of good to it. I don't think anyone would deny that Alfred Molina's Doc Ock is probably the best villain in the film franchise both in terms of design and character arc. And the train sequence is easily the best action sequence and probably one of the best in superhero movies in general. Sure, I can't stand Tobey Macguire, the romance with Kirsten Dunst was poorly handled at best, I really don't think it should be this high and I secretly prefer TASM 2, but it's not like any of you actually read this section is it?"

60. Blade Runner (1982) 21 points- 8 votes

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die."

blade_runnerDS.jpg

In a cyberpunk vision of the future, man has developed the technology to create replicants, human clones used to serve in the colonies outside Earth but with fixed lifespans. In Los Angeles, 2019, Deckard is a Blade Runner, a cop who specializes in terminating replicants. Originally in retirement, he is forced to re-enter the force when four replicants escape from an off-world colony to Earth.

Trivia: After Pris (Daryl Hannah) first meets Sebastian (William Sanderson), she runs away from him, skidding into his car and smashing the window with her elbow. This was a genuine mistake caused by Hannah slipping on the wet ground. The glass wasn't breakaway glass, it was real glass, and Hannah chipped her elbow in eight places.

Ruk's Comments

"I'll admit, I haven't watched this in quite a long time (and I may have watched the wrong cut since there are apparently about 70), but it seems like the sort of film, like Ghost in the Shell (which frustratingly didn't make it onto this list), that I really think might improve for me on a rewatch. And, even though it's been years, there are still a lot of moments I can clearly remember about it, mostly related to Rutger Hauer's haunting and intense performance as well as the film's unique and unmatched visual style."

59. Titanic (1997) 21 points- 9 votes

"Jack! This is where we first met."

Titanic-3D-1997.jpg

84 years later, a 101-year-old woman named Rose DeWitt Bukater tells the story to her granddaughter Lizzy Calvert, Brock Lovett, Lewis Bodine, Bobby Buell and Anatoly Mikailavich on the Keldysh about her life set in April 10th 1912, on a ship called Titanic when young Rose boards the departing ship with the upper-class passengers and her mother, Ruth DeWitt Bukater, and her fiancé, Caledon Hockley. Meanwhile, a drifter and artist named Jack Dawson and his best friend Fabrizio De Rossi win third-class tickets to the ship in a game. And she explains the whole story from departure until the death of Titanic on its first and last voyage April 15th, 1912 at 2:20 in the morning.

Trivia: After finding out that she had to be naked in front of Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet decided to break the ice, and when they first met, she flashed him.

Ruk's Comments

"While mostly remembered for setting the box office alight, I have to admit, Titanic is one of those films where the effects have really held up over time. Whether or not the story has is up to you, but there's no denying it that its simplicity does kinda work and there are a lot of scenes and lines from it that have become fully engrained in popular culture."

Controversy inbound...

58. The Dark Knight Rises (2012) 21 points- 12 votes

"Your punishment must be more severe."

TheDarkKnightRises_TeaserPoster.jpg

8 years after the events of The Dark Knight find Gotham at a time of peace. This is due to Batman taking the fall for Harvey Dent's murder. However, a new evil force named Bane has arrived in Gotham and aims to take over the city and expose the truth behind who Harvey Dent really was. Now that Wayne Manor has been completely rebuilt - Bruce Wayne has become almost reclusive, rarely leaving the estate. And with Bane taking over the city by force, it forces Batman to come out of retirement. But his allies are few and far apart. An elusive jewel thief by the name of Selina Kyle could be the key to stopping Bane - but whose side is she on?

Trivia: Anne Hathaway has said that she desperately coveted the role of Catwoman, and was a complete nervous wreck after her audition. The first time her agent phoned after her screen test, he said he had good news and asked if Hathaway was sitting down. Hathaway immediately screamed "I'm Catwoman!" and ran around the room in a frenzy. Unfortunately, her agent had to calm the actress down--he had called to let her know that she'd been invited to host the Academy Awards. Hathaway has said she was so shocked she went numb at the offer. Fortunately, shortly thereafter, her agent phoned again to let her know that she had been offered the part of Catwoman as well.

Ruk's Comments

"For fuck's sake....

Okay, I know I should probably be talking positive stuff about this film, but dammit people this does not deserve to be on the list at all, let alone this high. And this is coming from someone who likes the film! I mean, yes I get that this forum has a huge Nolan bias, but this is a heavily flawed movie! More plot holes than swiss cheese being shot by a machine gun! Batman's no-kill rule (the major focus of the last film) pretty much being tossed out the window! (Oh yeah Bruce, those goons in the tumbler are easily going to survive you blowing them up.) Bale's Batman voice somehow getting even stupider! Yes, the action is fantastic and there are quite a few good scenes in there (hence why I do actually like it) but come on. Placing it over Taxi Driver? Silence of the Lambs? Pan's Labyrinth? At least Frozen had the decency to be at the very back of the list..."
