Also, looking at Affleck's prior body of work, Argo did rather poorly overseas (OS was about 2/3 of DOM) despite most of the action taking place in Iran.  The Town, which is probably a better comparison to Gone Girl (although it lacked the best-selling book tie-in), also brought in OS only equal to about 2/3 of DOM.

Gone Girl isn't really a sequel to anything and Affleck isn't an international star the way, say, Robert Downey Jr has become, so there's no reason to think it will do any better than those previous movies internationally.

Argo was banned in Iran, so it made a grand total of zero dollars in the country it was taking place in.

Gone girl = gravity?

Let's not jump to that.  It's doing very well but remember that Gravity's numbers on Friday began to skyrocket midday.  Both films skew older but Gravity also performed well with the 20-somethings and it kept the momentum going into the late night.  I don't believe Gone Girl will be doing that but who knows at this point.

David Fincher's R-rated film adaptation of Gone Girl is doing impressive business at the Friday box office, putting the adult thriller on course for a debut in the $34 million range, marking the biggest opening of Fincher's career, not accounting for inflation.

Mirco-budgeted horror film Annabelle is also prospering, and could actually beat Gone Girl on Friday. However, since horror titles are front-loaded, it is expected to fall to No. 2 on Saturday and finish the weekend in the $25 million range to $30 million range, a sizeable victory for New Line and Warner Bros., considering Annabelle cost just $6.5 million to make.
