Film Critics Awards 2014. (winners in 1st post)

Recommended Posts

AFI Top Films of the Year:

American Sniper, Birdman, Boyhood, Foxcatcher, Imitation, Interstellar, Into the Woods, Nightcrawler, Selma, Unbroken, Whiplash.

So basically anything not on the list and American is out of the picture. Only DBC and EL&IC made it in without AFI. And those were very unique situations.

yay Foxcatcher made it!

i was (& still am a bit) worried abt it!

errrr "Ida" in both Foreign & Best film categories

ehh a bit much!

Pretty good and varied noms.

So was Two Days, One Night and LEGO is also in Best Animated.   If they're considered the top 10 of the year they should be included and not excluded because they're also tops in a sub category.

Ida is pretty great and Agata Kulesza is powerful in it though I'd consider her a co-lead. She has more dialogue and I connected more to her emotionally than the rather passive Ida.

But it will over at least one of those. Budapest and Gone Girl can't both make it in and Unbroken's close to locked.

It's hard to see how Unbroken is locked, the reviews are very poor for this type of film.  If it got in it looks like it'd be as bad as Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close making it in.

Have you seen Unbroken yet? I am guessing no, so I don't know why you are so against it.

Because Unbroken is blatant, unapologetic Oscar bait and the reviews are telling it as of now.

Ida's currently in my top 10 but then I've only seen twenty 2014 movies. I'd rate it a B+. I don't see it as Best Picture quality but it's better than some that have been mentioned.

I really liked the cinematography. In addition to being comprised of beautifully composed shots I felt it moved the story along and layered it in ways the lead did not because of her passivity.  I agree though that Agata Kulesza's is the best thing about the movie.

I haven't seen it yet either but Unbroken is feeling very much like a movie the industry believed would be an Oscar winner (because of the incredible book and life it's based on is the kind of thing the Academy laps up) and even in the face of reviews and the actual movie doesn't want to let those preconceptions go.

Such a sham really, Oscar bait that doesn't live up to the hype really should be treated as such.

2014 Online Film Critics Society Nominations

errrr "Ida" in both Foreign & Best film categories

ehh a bit much!

Sorry I don't mean American Sniper (but I think it is actually decently likely to miss). I meant any American films that weren't on the list are pretty close to dead at this point because only 2 American films have ever missed this list and still been nominated. One is EL&IC which is still a giant puzzle until this day and the other is DBC which had a massive SAG haul which jumpstarted and put it into the picture. NO ONE and I emphasize NO ONE was ever talking about DBC bing in the BP race until SAG.

It's hard to see how Unbroken is locked, the reviews are very poor for this type of film.  If it got in it looks like it'd be as bad as Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close making it in.

Unbroken is locked. It's got prestige, the reviews aren't going to be awful and it's hit NBR and AFI and it's in. Like I would put money on it at this point.

And so what if Unbroken's unapologetic Oscar bait? At the end of the day it's still going to be a decently good movie. Like people aren't trashing the movie.

ah now I get. Still seems like this year can break some previous trends. Nothing seems like its set in stone (except "Selma" I guess)

Sniper gets stronger every day (too bad b/c I wanted it to fail :P )

Hopefully "Unbroken" will make it through!

Your post made me more optimistic about its chances!

excited about SAG!

Hopefully AMVY & Fox can get some noms.

Curious about Big Eyes actually

Who knows maybe Adams & Waltz can surprise!

That's not exactly true. Ihave been following thefilmexperience for years (I like his predictions), and Nat began to predict a DBC nom really early

He's now predicting a Theory of everything nom while everyone else is thinking this film won't be finally nominated. Maybe a SAG surge is on the way?

I'm actually thinking TOE could be our 5th SAG nominee for ensemble. There's a crazy stat i won't quote cus y'all will think I'm looking too much into it, but I think we could see it show up.

Thinking:

Boyhood

Birdman

TOE

ITW

TIG

And that's one person, we always have the strange people who hold on to their early horses even when they have little buzz. He was just lucky that he got the prediction right. This was exactly like me and Tapley and a few other prognosticators on Amour who scored big on Oscar and BAFTA date based on nothing but gut feeling.

So not even talking about the fact ITW WAS SNUBBED FOR ENSEMBLE #crying but like I'll get over it. I'm really only rooting for it for Meh anyways, but let's start with the good:

TGBH OMFG LOVE Like if ITW missed for anything, I would have picked this. And Gone Girl = Dead

TOE pulled a DBC. I hate the movie (I really think it's boring and awful) but it's always nice to see the underdog that's struggled in a season pull out a big win and this is a GIANT WIN. LIKE EDDIE REDMAYNE'S GOING TO WIN THE SAG + OSCAR + BAFTA BIG WIN.

The Bad:

No Fiennes with TGBH.....

I think they snubbed half of the actress contenders or something? I dunno. I haven't followed that race closely enough...

The Awful:

Admitting that Crone was right that Eddie was going to win.

WTF Nanny

WTF Aniston??????

WTF Hawke?????? I thought he was lead...
