Upcoming Nu Image / Millennium movies “Expendables 4” and “Security” are headed for China.

That follows deals with
Steven Paul’s SP International Pictures on behalf of SSXH Beijing and Max Screen Film Distribution.

The deals cover equity investments in both films and provide Chinese distribution rights. Both movies may use China as a location for some scenes, though it is not expected that there will be enough Chinese elements for them to be considered as full co-productions.

"Expendables 4” will shoot in 2016 and be delivered in 2017. Neither director nor cast have yet been announced, though the picture is expected to have maintain its all-action star formula. It is to be produced on a budget of over $100 million.

The twin China deals involve a transaction in excess of $25 million. They were negotiated between Avi Lerner, Trevor Short and Jeffrey Greenstein for Nu Image and Steven Paul and SPIP on behalf of SSXH and Max Screen Beijing.

Dr. Shi Jianxiang, chairman of Shanghai Kuailu Investment Group, which owns SSXH and Max Screen, and Steven Paul (“Ghost Rider,” “Baby Geniuses,” “Tekken”) will be credited as executive producers on both pictures. Dr. Shi was part of Chinese president Xi Jinping’s recent delegation to the U.S.

The “Expendables” franchise films have proved some of the most successful independent pictures in the Chinese market. “Expendables 3” grossed $39.2 million in North America where it was handled by Lions Gate Films, but $78 million in China.

“What seems to work in their favour in China, is that these movies are good old-fashioned shoot ’em up entertainment,” Paul told Variety.

Wonder how Expendables 4 could do DOM-wise?

The third one made a pretty small $39M DOM. That's the lowest it went. When it goes that low,....there is nowhere to go but up with this fourth one.

And WW-wise, too?

Very early to predict something but just for fun why not? :)

Last year I wrote here that the PG-13 Rating was a bigger factor to make fans angry and cancel Expendables 3 than I thought. That will not happen again.

The leak was a big problem too, hopefully and very probably that also does not happen again.

Then there is as lack of interest in action films in general as it seems in the USA. But I read several times that The Rock showed interest and that Stallone wants him in the next Expendables movie too. Should help. How much, I don't know. But I would say, it will no way finish under 60-65M in the US (that's my worst case scenario).

And WW? I think there's still a lot of interest. This news is already or will be (it's midnight here in Europe) of course one of the most dsicussed news of the week. That's all I can say. My optimistic guess is: With R-Rating and an interesting cast, it will do numbers like Expendables 2 or higher.

So overall, make a nice film that fans like and it will work very well.

I don't see this doing very well anywhere but China. The interest seems dead, no one seemed interested in part 3, even before the PG13 rating was announced. It's a gimmick series and the gimmick of having all the action stars together has worn out and what we're left with is uninteresting plots, and cheap looking action. Although at least filming in China will give them a new location to play around with.

Stallone needs to seek my advice.  Not kidding either.  I could have made Ex 2 and 3 so much better.  He had something so awesome with the first one and then he tried to make it better.  It's like Coke creating New Coke in the 80's.  No one thought Coke needed to be new because it was already pretty awesome.  Same with the first Expendables.  He did is so well and then got away from that formula.  He needs to go back to what worked in the first one.

To be honest I liked the second one the best, and I hated the third one, but I've still got hope here since Stallone's usually pretty good at seeing what people didn't like about a movie and improving on it for the sequel. (though despite his and the internet's weird believe that the pg-13 rating was the problem it most certainly was not. it was the least of that movie's problems)

The first movie was a throwback to really violent / over the top action movies from the 80s filled with R-rated language.  Whether or not it succeeded at that, for some reason each sequel moved further and further away from that.  I think thats why these movies have gotten worse and more rejected by audiences with each one.  I remember the hype for the first movie being "Woohoo! 80s nostalgia porn!  Hell yeah!".   Now who the fuck is excited for Expendables 4? Pretty much no one except for China maybe.  Idiots in charge of these movies killed a great opportunity.

I've only seen the second but watching it even I could tell that the franchise was already having an identity crisis. The switch between silly action and dour drama gave me whiplash. extending the color palette beyond grey wouldn't have hurt either.

The CGI blood was never the problem.  The problem is the mano a mano fights were so good in the first and for some reason, they got away from that in the sequels.  Van Damme should have fought Lundgren in the second and Li should have fought Gibson in the third.  Missed opportunities.

The second film is the best one, and Van Damme helps make it so (who would have said that ten years ago?)   I wanted the letter opening scene at the end to reveal that Van Damme actually had a twin brother as a way of bringing him back for the next movie...I was so sure that was where they were going!

Gibson was indeed a missed opportunity...his fight with Stallone was like...five seconds?  Snipes was the most entertaining thing in the third movie!
