You know on Family Guy when they do the random cut away gag's that are pretty much just pop culture references? yeah that's how I felt about this trailer but I liked it.

It's just not appealing watching a live action film that's half video game. Maybe if the Oasis scenes were Pandora quality but they're not. They're close, but it's just not good enough.

I get it, Spielberg is visually telling us eighties nostalgia is an ugly chimaera underneath a shiny toddler blanket.

 

I find an interesting parrallel when the Internet is bumbling with Elsagate (Or how bots from legally dubious countries are mass producing disturbing random videos aimed at children made of most trending IP's and search engine results to trick Youtube algorythms for monetization). Basically a virtual world being a hodgepodge of random pop culture items would be an on-going ADHD chaos.

 

The Oasis looks like Google AI's idea of the Matrix designed from PSN users personal data and search habits.

If Spielberg subverts the idea of the book in order to run a commentary on the problems with nostalgia and "escaping" into a virtual world I'll dig it. It just doesn't seem that way based on the trailer and, obviously, the book.

My biggest obsession with the trailer is how many songs would've worked better than "Jump" and how the FCC has to destroy Net Neutrality before millennials use this movie as a final rallying cry.
