Looks like a an awesome imax 3d ride with shit ton of cgi. I think it's a stylistic choice to make it video gamey rather than going for photo real or uncanny stuff. Unfortunately, such stuff doesn't appeal to general audience. I fully expect a 70-80% on RT because nowadays Spielberg's movies get a free pass. The boxoffice will be between 70-90M domestic as it is based on a popular novel and has lot of nostalgic stuff. Overseas could be anywhere from 250-350M.

You would, wouldn't you? You would.

Sensing negative RT score incoming for this one. Something along the lines of "so meta, so edgy, so many shallow references and yet so empty of any real feeling" for most critics would be my guess. That's the kind of work that is very easy to dismiss and nitpick to death if you just aren't in that sweet spot while watching(and reading) it. It is what it is.

We don't know how different the film will be from the novel and I suspect a lot of references will be visual only similar to Wreck it Ralph.

And that's probably what the critics will complain about, the whole shallow aspect of it.

I'm sure some will critics will probably comment on how fun it is, but I expect a lot of "80's references overload" type blasts. Wouldn't surprise me at all if the virtual world only makes up like 30% of the film's running time or something though.

This looks like it could be Spielberg's second real box office bomb. Not sure he is capable of making blockbusters that appeal to the GA anymore.

I thought 1941 was also one, but in hindsight that it was considered a giant flop look very strange now and that was probably only because it was him, it still did change how spending averse and always doing everything to save money he became for the rest of is career too.

Looks like an ugly disjointed mess.

Maybe, but one thing that would be a massive surprise to see Spielberg do is a disjointed mess, he can do boring for sure, but it seem impossible for him to do something messy.

He pretty much still cut in camera and do the rough cut on set every night and does not find is movies in the editing room (it is not that recent that him and is team even use an Avid computer instead of traditional editing by cutting actual film, I think Tintin was is first digitally edited movie).

We can assume it will be solid clear easy to follow storytelling.

A movie being a mess doesn’t have anything to do with the technical edit machinery, though.
