Hope this is finally the Laika movie that fully works for me. I admire their films but I've yet to really enjoy one

Slightly annoyed at the voice cast boasting, but it does indeed look like Disney will have strong competition next year.

 

Hope the tone of the teaser is indicative of the actual film. This needs a much faster pace than usual for Laika.

You have to think of teasers as "sizzle reels". You can't expect the plot to be laid out 8 months in advance

Looks gorgeous, but this "teaser" route they went only works effectively for a franchise. I can't think of a worse way to market an animated movie no one has any clue about. Obviously the trailers in the future will explain more, but that was essentially a waste in terms of marketing terms.

I got the trailer again at Star Wars but at a different theater. Don't know what moves theaters to place this particular trailer.

In terms of visuals and tone, it looks fantastic.

 

However, a lot of people have taken issue with the fact that white actors are voicing characters of color (which I can see where they're coming from), but at the same time, animation studios have been doing this for years, and we still see POC on the screen. I would be more unabashedly excited if they actually cast Japanese people in these roles, but it's still, sadly, a pretty gutsy move for an animation studio.

I'm more impressed considering it's stop motion rather than CG. Laika and Aardman are the only two animation companies that push the boundaries of stop motion.
