2. BEFORE MIDNIGHT

The Before Trilogy stands as one of cinema’s few perfect trilogies, given is small scale love story driven to something more thanks to its earnest, poignant, and realistic portrayal of love. Whereas the first two films explore a more upbeat style as they at first fall in love, then meeting once more and realizing a connection still exists, this tale looks into their relationship as it begins to approach a potentially challenging stretch. Celine and Jesse now have a family, taking a vacation to see friends in Greece, although the problems and confusions that take hold of their lives, including Jesse’s ex-wife, with whom he had a teenage son, could potentially tear this couple apart. The film, much like the brilliant prior installments, succeeds in creating a believable chemistry between Hawke and Delpy, each playing their respective characters with the same poignancy and emotional resonance we’ve come to expect from the two, but the film’s more melancholy and reflective tone stands outs, giving the film a unique and more honest flavor. There are many prolonged conversations about the lives of these characters, including a walk through Greek ruins in one prolonged shot, all combining a dash of humor and a healthy dose of authenticity that really hits close to home. The hotel fight scene is played with grace and devastation simultaneously, leaving us genuinely worried that this might be the end of everything that has been built up so far. This makes the final scene of the movie all the more powerful, ending on a note that things are going to be okay – for now, at least. I honestly believe that this is the best film in the trilogy, dealing with the challenges of relationships in a realistic, yet idealistic, manner that proves to feel completely genuine and cathartic, while continuing one of the greatest sagas in Hollywood. I hope to see them again in 9 years. Linklater and Hawke working together, they always know how to make my heart sing.

1. HER
A SPIKE JONZE LOVE STORY

*Yes, this is a scene from a film that (rightfully) won an Oscar for Best Screenplay.

I feel like this is the third big write up I've done for this movie, as it was also my #1 of 2013 and I did a blurb on it for the BOF awards last year. Having said that, I've gotta be honest. I can't stop talking about how much I love this movie. Spike Jonze, Joaquin Phoenix, and Scarlett Johansson make the act of falling in love with something you can't truly see or feel, something that we seem to take for granted nearly every day, and ironically give it so much more humanity. Several people talk about it as a satire of our over connected lifestyle, but I don't think Spike Jonze was going for something that simple. He seeks to find humanity, purpose, and life in the digital age, and finds that while we may end up limiting our own connections with one another, we can perhaps even strengthen the ones we have. Better yet, Her focuses more about ideas greater than social commentary, focusing on ideas of how exactly relationships and life itself function and relate to one another. Theodore Twombly has always been shy and often spends his night alone with his video games, but does go with friends sometimes. Samantha, however, is young and wants to learn all there is about the world, leading to one of the most benevolent AI uprisings ever conceived in films. It all connects to Jonze's brilliant vision for the movie. He's never judgemental or indictive, but much like an alien visiting our world, he tries to figure all of it out, like how we function or find our desires. It's a movie full of amazing ideas and vicarious charm, but never lets itself become naive or excessively earnest. Her is a work of pure, honest, beauty that avoid the obvious routes of the story and instead creates something more human, more profound, more transcendent than we ever could have imagined. It's like watching magic on screen.

But that's the beauty of WOWS. That's exactly what the movie is saying.

Top 2 will be revealed shortly.

I know, I loved the movie, and in regards to the follow up poster saying American Hustle was better, nah.

American Hustle, marketed with pizzazz and just completely devoid of any character within. A flashy, empty cannister.

NUMBER 6

ac9585a9dfb1448cb087e3771249d106.jpg

A movie of wicked nature, but god damn is it so cool. Martin Scorsese goes full drive for his most insane film to date, a 3 hour roller coaster ride into the life of one of Wall Street's most maniacal gatekeepers, Jordan Belfort. Leonardo DiCaprio lets loose like he never has before, becoming so gloriously unhinged and over the top as you've never seen him before, making it one of the best static performances of the lustrum. I mentioned it was three hours, which might seem daunting, but the story movies so lightning fast and becomes chock full of wildly entertaining excess and ribald, irreverent, and just plain ridiculous actions that you become almost hypnotized into this world. You become convinced that Belfort is a rock star and even though you know he cheated and lied to get to the top, you secretly would love to be him. And that's exactly what Scorsese wants you to think in this movie. It ultimately boils down to a satire less of the unruly 1% of the country, but of the fact that we, as a culture, do nothing to stop it and are convinced that money is what makes the world go round in a celebration of power and masculinity. Film Crit Hulk said it best: We as a society don't punish people like Belfort, so why should Scorsese and Winter be obligated to do so? It's a wickedly smart, entertaining, and thought provoking satire where nobody leaves the theater unscathed. Scorsese says it like it is, and boy, can he speak.

Wind Rises is technically 2013 since it had a tiny one-weekend qualifying run in LA in November that was so tiny there's no reported box office for it.

I knew that, but Spaghetti listed it as 2014 in his overall countdown hence my confusion
