I think American Sniper will do most of its business domestically but I think its OS performance will be better than similar films, its done very well in Italy and I expect it'll do well in places like the UK and Australia.

I'm in the UK, and the showing at my cinema tonight was completely sold out. That's exceptional for my cinema, though I don't know if the same thing happened everywhere else.

Launching in the same week as the Oscar nominations plus Bradley Cooper as the draw likely helped as normally these types of film don't do well OS, both Lone Survivor and Zero Dark Thirty didn't perform well in the UK for example

I was sold on American Sniper being a breakout hit when I saw its TV ad spend numbers. WB had spend $43 million on TV ads as of last week which means that they will spend upwards of $70 million+ on P&A when everything is said and done. You don't spend this kind of money on movies that will only do $100 million theatrical.

Oh it was better marketed for sure, that I'll give you. Of course it was likely afforded the money for marketing that Selma never was. And that alone is sad that Selma was not considered "appealing" enough to invest more of a marketing push in, but Sniper was. I'm sure the man in American Sniper did important things for the military and country. I don't need to see it though to know that his story is not nearly as important to tell right now as MLK's. The Ferguson incident is proof that a large chunk of American are forgetting or brushing aside the importance of race equality, and that is completely unacceptable. A biopic steeped in violence is not what people need to be associating their American patriotism with right now. Or worse, fall under the misguided patriotic notion that America is so great and we have no issues.
