Mockingjay Raphael

Weekend Numbers SB: 56, AS 24.1, JA 19 pg 54

Recommended Posts

It really should have had a sequel, despite it not being that good and absolutely bombing. It's the type of story that can't be told with just one movie, which was its big major problem.

Yeah, I feel like the film didn't really take the time to introduce us to the characters just plowed ahead with the story without getting the audience invested.

Definitely not. After Earth looked like ass from the first few seconds of the trailer! Lol

JA didn't look terrible it just didn't look really good. It just never connected with the GA.

That has been the  Wachowski problem of the last decade. None of their films since the last Matrix sequel has connected with the GA.

They have had there big budgets strikes in row,and as far as getting any more big budgets for anything but a new Matrix movie, the siblings ae out.

2015 off to a great, great start. So many certain megahits still to come to...

2015 $1,208.7

2014 $1,091.0

2013 $975.6

2012 $992.0

2011 $878.3

2010 $1,221.3

Data as of Jan 1–Feb 8 of the respective year.

Its almost scary how ahead 2015 is compared to 2011-2013. No, it is scary. And they said the box office was dying.

So can someone tell me why Spongebob is not certified fresh yet? It has 59 reviews, 25 from top critics, and is sitting at 75%, and it went up to 76-77% at one point. I thought the criteria was 40 reviews at least and 75% fresh? What gives?

Thoughts on SpongeBob from me:

Nostalgia: As mentioned earlier, the only people who were really laughing heartily at my theater were some high school aged girls and I. That said, I kinda recommend going at an around 3 showtime. After the movie, I saw a seven-year-old boy talk to his dad eagerly about his favorite parts of the movie while the dad just nodded his head and said "yeah." That was me and my dad ten years ago!! Such a fun time and I really felt like a little kid again while watching the movie.

CinemaScore: Not particularly surprised seeing how the marketing (smartly) focused on the live-action stuff which is barely in the movie. Also, for anyone who isn't a SpongeBob fan who's dragged to see this, they'll absolutely hate it. Pretty sure that's half the parents going to it so... yeah.

Legs: I'm thinking this'll drop little next week because of President's Day weekend but more importantly, if Fifty Shades sells out, I definitely see a dating couple picking to see SpongeBob over Kingsman. It's more light-hearted, and probably a great movie to see as a couple. SpongeBob will definitely be big next week and probably have a nice healthy run.

And with that, I'm back to my sabbatical. See y'all in a couple weeks (except for possibly the weekend thread next week)!

By March 1, 2015 will be severely ahead of 2010 and 2009, too. 50 Shades + SpongeBob + Sniper + Kingsman=a potential $270-275 million over the 4 day next week. That doesn't include JA's eventual $45-55 million finish, McFarland possibly legging its way to $50-55 million and Focus potentially doing $75-80 million.

Could 2015 match 2002-2004 in attendance? Crazy to think about...

I find it strange how much supposedly nostalgia this generated Blankments, I was, like a lot of ppl, a huuuge fan of the show until the first movie and after ten long years, I have grown this show out and baaarely see the old episodes even if I still respect them. I thought there would be more ppl like me

So, with SpongeBob breaking out huge and then Fifty Shades and possibly Kingsman next week we really are in for a better than already highly expected 2015.

I don't think kingsman is going to breakout. I see maybe a 18-20m opening. American sniper isn't done yet

Sniper targets a different demo from Kingsman.

Kingsman's main audience is 18-30 yr old guys. Sniper's main audience is older adults, Christians, Republicans/conservatives, and the Oscar bait crowd.

Both can coexist - especially since they'll benefit from 50 Shades sellouts. Same with SpongeBob 2 to a lesser extent.

Kingsman's definitely in a position to break out with a $35-40 million 4 day, especially with the solid reviews and great trailers.

Happy birthday, Rth! I hope godhood is going well.

And man, what a weekend. I always knew the new SpongeBob would be a hit, but I had no idea it would blow the 2004 movie out of the water (pun realized but unintended).

Box office wise, 2015 definitely seems to be trying to make up for 2014.
