I just do not understand the appeal of this film series

Is it not vastly the same than the books series ? A form of perfect fantasy for a large enough percentage of the audience, like lot of teenage boys like to imagine being Spider-Man so those movie appeal to them, lot of woman love to imagine meeting a billionaire and doing those things ? A bit regardless of the films qualities.

It's actually a shame that they haven't done better with the material cause plenty of people actually like it. I mean, the first movie was serviceable so I'm sure they could have made the next two decent as well if they really tried.

I guess it was the change of directors as @ddddeeeepointed out.

The problem is more the source material than anyone involved with the movies IMO. The second one came up with some really absurd contrivances and easily resolved drama in an effort to turn what started out as a kinky romance novel into a franchise.

Nah, there was no way to make this franchise good. The first one gets a pass from people for the novelty of the lifestyle and literal porn, but after that there was just nothing left. The acting and storyline were just as banal there, but it was new and not exhausted yet.

I see the studios underselling this BIG TIME so they can pretend that a $40 million OW will be a huge number.

Saw a free screening last night. It's truly terrible, but in a so-bad-its-kinda-good sort of way. Dakota continues to be the saving grace – she's adorable and incredibly endearing, even when having to read the worst lines imaginable.

The writing and directing is awful as could be, though.

Oh, and FWIW, the moms in the audience ate it up. Lots of cheering and gasping/moaning, lol.

I think women are going to be lining up to watch this regardless of the quality. This is just one of those critic proof franchises among a certain crowd.

Yep book fans and Valentines Day couples will power this to 90-100m

worldwide this will go over 300m

I've read the 55m budget is actually the budget of both sequels combined

this series will be crazy profitable

Should have gotten Paul Verhoeven to direct the series

That's actually the best idea I have heard in a very long time.

and should have cast Sharon Stone as Anastasia

The irony with this franchise is that despite them trying to push the whole "hot" aspect of it, it never quite showed enough to please the fantasy of it's target audience (deprived housewives).

They should have gone harder.

Well, there's only so much you can show within the confines of an R rating. The series would've gone to either HBO or Cinemax if they wanted to get away with anything and everything.

They should have gone harder.

They also should’ve cast actors who have chemistry with each other on screen and are capable of pretending they like each other off screen. It certainly helped the Twilight movies. Dakota Johnson tries, but the guy who plays Christian always looks embarrassed.

Don't the two actors hate each other in real life? That's probably why they look so bored on screen.

I doubt they dislike each other (there's never been reports of them not getting along), they probably just wish they weren't in these movies (although Dakota Johnson at least seemed engaged in the first film).

Though I am grateful for this being the shortest film in the trilogy clocking in at an hour and forty-five minutes, there is still nothing to be said in this movie. Its just is a looping circle that never ends. The drama leads to arguments which lead to a sex scene and then to extensive pointless scenes of frolicking on some sort of vacation which leads to more sex scenes. Oh my God, this has the same nonsensical narrative circle of “The Room.”  I shouldn't denounce "The Room" like that but you know what? At least "The Room" is:

- Remarkably bad

- Enjoyable to watch

- Wasn’t stretched out to three fucking movies.
