Gary Ross’s Civil War drama, Free State Of Jones, has added rising star Gugu Mbatha-Raw to its ranks. The actress, who’s currently receiving widespread critical praise for her turns in Beyond The Lights and Belle, will be starring opposite Matthew McConaughey in the period drama.

Set during the 1920s and based on a true story, the film revolves around a Confederate soldier named Newton Knight (McConaughey), who defected from the army and chose to kickstart a rebellion. Now considered somewhat of a legendary figurehead during that period of conflict, his band of deserters – The Knight Company – set about creating their own place to call home: the free state of Jones.

In the first role cast outside of McConaughey’s leading part, Mbatha-Raw will be sticking by his side as “Rachel, a slave whose relationship with Knight played a central part in his life.” Their relationship went down in the history books, as Knight entered into a common-law marriage with Rachel after helping establish one of the first mixed-race communities in the area.

Gary Ross is a great director. Pleasantville and Seabiacuit are great movies, and at least the first Hunger Games has it's own style.

Pretty much what I asked upon seeing it. According to imdb this has a $65 million budget, so I take it they're coming out swinging.

BREAKING: Adam Fogelson, the former chairman of Universal Pictures, has been hired as the Motion Picture Group chairman of  STX Entertainment, the mini TV and film studio created by Robert Simonds, TPG Growth, Gigi Pritzker, and Hony Capital. STX has yet to figure on a solid name. Fogelson will be responsible for overseeing eight-to-10 mid-range budgeted ($20M to $60M), star-driven features to be produced, marketed, and distributed in-house. Fogelson’s brother, Noah, currently works at STX as EVP of corporate development and general counsel so it makes perfect sense why he would join the company. Fogelson started out working in marketing with his father Andrew and now gets the chance to work with his brother.

 

The key hire comes as STX Entertainment has been ramping up at a rapid pace over the past few weeks. It hired former Disney and Fox marketing topper Oren Aviv to oversee motion picture development, production, and marketing at the new film and TV studio. It also hired Universal distribution exec Kevin Grayson as president of domestic distribution; he starts at month’s end. Rich Sullivan, who had been at DreamWorks since 2005, was also brought in as STX’s chief financial officer.

These two are completely different kind of movies. Free State of Jones is going to appeal to the older (30+) audience while the under-30 is the primary demographics for Warcraft.  That said, Free State Of Jones should open during the Oscars season to maximize the returns.

Smart move, gives it a completely open release date once Friday the 13th moved and Neighbors 2 was pushed one week.

As a Hard Core Civil War buff, I will be there opening night,despite it will probably be another case where what actuallly happened in history is much more interesting then the Hollywood cliches we will be given.
