2. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

Spielberg and Lucas's homage to old-fashioned adventure serials essentially established the blueprint for modern blockbuster action movies. The sequences themselves are amazing to behold and all the beats unfold perfectly -- Spielberg uses the classic technique of letting action play out in multiple master shots, rather than a lot of quick-cut tighter elements, and this allows the viewer a much better sense of scene (and screen) geography and the inter-relationship between multiple characters and elements. But in addition to that, they created one of the most classic, iconic action heroes ever: a man of intellect and intelligence who also used brawn when he had to. What makes Indy great is his continual human ability to fail: he's consistently the underdog or a beat or two behind the villains, and every time he gets close to success (only to have it yanked away) we love him even more. But even more than the wonderful characters and great action, RAIDERS gets to the heart of something deeper and more mythic. I heard a screenwriter recently say that from one perspective, the logline of the RAIDERS story is of a pragmatic and agnostic man struggling (and eventually finding and accepting) his faith. You simply don't find many action/adventure movies that have that sort of thematic depth.

No way, Bourne trumps both ( LotR is great though)

Bourne films are amazing, but I can't class it as the greatest trilogy as to me, LOTR is one of the few trilogies out there that actually feels like a trilogy rather than just a movie with sequels. I'm probably making no sense but ah well. The sheer epicness of LOTR made them movies feel like that rare event, not many films can replicate that.

Individually speaking

FOTR > Bourne 1

Bourne 2 > TTT

ROTK <> Bourne 3 (I can't choose)

I just wasn't sure if I actually needed to post anything.

1. Lawrence of Arabia (1962)

The intellectual epic that all others are compared with. Lean is in top form, using KWAI as a starting point and taking it to another level. Robert Bolt's script (from an earlier draft by Robert Wilson) is legendary -- sparse, elegant, never a wasted word. Freddie Young's 70mm cinematography and Maurice Jarre's score are likewise legendary. Like STAR WARS and 2001 would later, this movie inspired a whole generation of filmmakers and is the gold standard for why movies should be seen on as big a screen as possible.
