Adjusting Exchange Rates... (First post updated with Jason's new list)

Recommended Posts

Yeah, I too 'mourn' (term?) the loss of so many countries' actual BO there.

I did a post (I think in the dom AoU thread) about which countries either do have the Euro or are 'bound' to the Euro (that details seem even less generally known), ... I guess some might not have been aware about the size ... of it

Might be helpful for such a project that the Euro is in use for such a big 'region', hopefully for you less exchange rate adjusting work for a part of the world's details.

It does look a like a very big / daunting project, already set on 'follow'

The problem is not exchange rates, but average ticket prices. The exchange rates are available for nearly every currency in the world and I do not care to make 1 or 100 currencies. Once you get the history of a certain currency, it is an immediate calculation. It takes no longer than 1 minute.

Unfortunately exchange rates will always fluctuate. It will have to be constantly updated. Population fluctuates too but to a lesser degree. Admissions is the way to go I think.

I am trying to do it, but it is horrible. I need lists of admissions of every country. I have a few of them, but in general, they are not available.

I do not know if it would be so hard. Right now TA would have made $755m OS, which means $140m less than original gross. Maybe just China can cover that loss (I have taken $90m for TA in China and it would make $92m today. Yuan has nos lost its value. It has even increased a bit). With inflation and more admissions I do not see so hard to reach those $895m OS. Another thing is if we talk about WW, since it is probable TA2 will not match TA DOM. Maybe a possible $75m DOM drop can be covered with more admissions and inflation OS. We will see. It can be quite close, IMHO.

If Its released on Sunday, 200m is really difficult without any holiday.Maybe 1 billion yuan more reasonable.

If TA2 fails to beat DH2's 960M OS, my trolling will be unstoppable.

Thank you. I already had some of them, but others are new for me :)

However, to adjust for inflation what would be really needed is the average ticket price of each country along the years. It is very hard to find that info.

If a box office site provides raw data for admissions, you would not need the average ticket price to adjust for inflation. Either that or I'm missing your meaning. In any case, this site here provides average ticket price I think. Unfortunately I'm not a paying member so I cannot check it. Some are available for free like the United kingdom and the domestic market:

Others are like this

Worldwide: http://www.statista.com/statistics/307378/average-cinema-admission-price-worldwide/

Germany: http://www.statista.com/statistics/382600/cinema-ticket-price-germany/

etc etc.

I knew that page ;)

And there are some files and pages on Internet that give some data, but not all of them. I have data from Argentina (since 1997), Australia (1976), some of France, Germany, Japan, Spain, UK, SK, Italy, ...

What I want to do is to adjust the WW list. So if I have the admissions of every film in every country, I still would need the current average ticket price of each country to obtain the gross adjusted and add all of them to get the WW figure.

That's impossible. Even if you could get the average ticket price for each country you would need to have the average ticket price for each movie in every country. That would be a titanic task. Almost impossible IMO

That is the problem... I am trying to collect that info. I have some countries, but there are others which are more difficult to find. If we collect the biggest markets then we can set an average inflation to the rest of the markets to complete. It would not be exact, but less is nothing.

Edit: it is needed at least 1 number out of this 2: admissions of the film or average ticket price of the release year. And beyond that it is needed for sure the current average ticket price. Very laborious

Only for curiousity reasons, any details found about 2D/3D split

3D additions to ticket prizes

and extra long running time additions too?

It varied over the time and seems to depend also on the cinema owners, a source for each or all details for one or several countries out of the ~ top 20 BO countries I'd be very interested, just in case you found something.

What's your problem? Stop using red ink.

'then' btw, if we are going to be picky ;)

I use red especially for people who do not always seem to see the message's details, or in quotes as the script is a bit ... not 'contrasty' enough, or... to show which word in my post got especially chosen for what word in the quote = a kind of pairing.

2nd. post: implying a 'we' & already trying to influence another persons project = both IMHO shows no real respect for the work of another person.

3rd. post: little bee... would you call e.g. your PM, Queen, an adult & respected family member,... that?

I may be not good in formulating English, but I read a lot in English. As in really a lot.

I know only 2 'reasons' for using that wording: 1. being amused about some child's action or 2. more or less condensing.

Each post read as a 'stand alone'..., but in combination with lots of others posts here at BOT showing IMHO a strong tendency of ... not respecting others, these 3 in a row posts to me do not look 'innocent', but as you asked why .... maybe you really are not aware how your posts can be interpreted too?

Than =/= then, thanks for the hint, as you can see in my signature, my English is mainly self-trained, those two I still tend to mix up.

Let's make the basic WW adjuster with simple figures and later we can make more things ;)

Didn't meant it as for now, a 'normal list is IMHO really the best as a first huge step. I don't dare to hope for those details to find sources for all the main countries.

You told you look out for such details since years, I am only wondering if you found a nice chart, website,... that might give a bit details about one or the other country.

No, I have not found data about 3D. But I think there are some posters here that have access to those data

1st, let me say this is one AWESOME THREAD.

Thanks for taking the time to compile all this data and share with us your findings. If you're going to adjust for inflation (down the line) I'm sure you already have the link to the http://lumiere.obs.coe.int/web/search/ website which has complied admission data for European countries. I haven't had any luck trying to track down a similar web site for the other regions of the world (South America, etc...). But if I find one I will definitely post a link to it here. Keep up the awe inspiring work Peludo, this is what Boxoffice theory was made for, actual boxoffice analysis.

It's a rare thing on the forums now a days.
