Katzenberg will be disappointed, it'll be profitable but to do less than KFP and KFP2 isn't good. It must hurt that Zootopia beat it in China as well.

Panda 3 is stuck between SW7 & Zootopia. Payback for those anti-Disney digs in Shrek?

Lets say 365-370 finish....

KFP2 - China: around 402m

KFP3 - China: around 210m

Excuding China, its making like half the gross of KFP2....this heavy drop isnt very common OS with blockbuster sequels....

Well I think 2 of the biggest factors of animation sequels blowing up in the previous decade were the addition of 3D and the wild expansion of many OS markets outside of China. Both of these things have slowed down a lot in the last couple of years.

Shrek

2001 - 217m

2004 - 478m

2007 - 476m

Kind of unfair because Shrek 2 was a true monster hit, but no3 ended up about the same despite the big OS expansions in Asia/S.America/Eastern Europe.

Ice Age

2001 - 207m

2006 - 466m

2009 - 690m

No3 had 3D and also massive OS market expansion

Madagascar

2005 - 339m

2008 - 424m

2012 - 530m

Also 3D + OS expanison

My point is most of the big animation franchises really blew up with 2nd one and then increased some more mainly because of the more favorable boxoffice enviroment.

Kung Fu Panda

2008 - 416m

2011 - 500m

2016 - 355m

Kung Fu Panda really peaked with the 1st one both DOM and OS. No2 increased 85m over no1, 70 of which came just from China blowing up.

I think it will be interesting to see how much Ice Age 5 or How to Train Your Dragon 3 are gonna drop, because if like KFP3 they don't explode in China, their OS total is gonna drop pretty hard. The only franchise that seems untouched by this kind of fatigue is Despicable Me. Minions didn't really blew up in China compared to DM2, but it did almost everywhere else despite most markets having already slowed down/reaching maturity and not having the 3D advantage over DM2.

It depends on how the WOM will be for those movies. Ice Age 3 & Ice Age 4 were both pretty huge OS, but those 2 pretty much had mediocre reception. Maybe the decrease could play part to the 5th one....if it's less received and less liked than 3 & 4.

As for How to Train Your Dragon 3?......well, the second movie, although it dropped DOM, did pretty well, WW-wise with over $621M WW. And some fans think the HTTYD-brand has arguably a lot bigger fanbase than Kung Fu Panda. It could very well be the animated sequel worth seeing in 2018, rather than Toy Story 4, which that is the one people care less about....since TS3 ended on a high note. It only needs to be very good to bring the big bucks....and pick a better release slot for their OS-markets.....not like KFP3 where they picked wrong dates.

Non-China OS saw a slight increase of $20M and I see a decrease coming round this time so China increase will barely compensate. $530M

?!! What?!

KFP2 made 410M without China.

KFP3 has a big chance of being the first movie to make $400M from China. You expect the rest of the OS markets to fall 250M+ from the last one?

I don't know about other regions, but this will be the first $400m movie in China.

Laugh freely at yourselves. Laughing is good for your health.

I also wanted to add that in contrast to the people who were making fun of me last year because of my astronomically inaccurate estimate of Jurassic World, I at least have the decency to make fun of you guys because my estimate of Kung Fu Panda 3 ($530M) is actually very close to the actual. The people who made fun of me for Jurassic World had wildly inaccurate predictions too, just not as inaccurate as mine, so they were just being a*sholes.

Months ago that prediction was very low and now is correct.Good for you.
